But even those who receive the divine call must prove their mettle before they can earn a darshan of the gods who reside in hard –to-reach nooks of the mighty mountains. In that respect Badrinath is less demanding than the two other dhams of Yamunotri and Kedarnath .In Badrinath one can drive up to within 200 kms of the main temple. But the roads here are treacherous and far more prone to land slides than any other region on this pilgrim’s trail.
Indeed, many stretches of the road are restricted to one-way traffic with timeslots determining which way it flows. As a result we have to rise early and be at the gate on the outskirts of Joshimath to catch the 6.30 a.m time barrier. Once the gates, opened we were traveling in a convoy of assorted vehicles from rattling buses and trucks to sleek SUVs down a rod that snaked through the narrow valley gouged out by the Alaknanda as it hurried through the mountains as though it was running late for its appointment with the Ganga downstream.
We drove through spectacular mountainous landscapes – a vast, never ending canvas where the panel behind every corner was awe inspiring. At times the slops would be covered by green meadows punctuated by a few trees. Rather than sit back and take in the beauty, we were distracted by the nagging fear any moment the rocks above the road would come crashing down on us. And wherever we passé a little roadside shrine, the driver would slow down just a tad to acknowledge the deity residing there in the hope that it would ensure our safe journey.
