The Brahmin and the Cheats There used to live a Brahmin named Mitrasharma in a village. One day he went to his host’s house to perform oblation. His host gave him a very healthy goat as his Dakshina after the oblation. The Brahmin carried the goat on his shoulder and proceeded homeward. Three cheats saw the Brahmin coming. They decided to steal his goat. One of them came near Mitrasharma and said - 'O Brahmin! Being a Brahmin, it is not proper for you to carry a dog like this. You will become impure by the dog’s touch.' Mitrasharma became angry. He said - 'You fool! Don’t you see I am carrying a goat and not a dog.' The first cheat replied - 'Don't be angry. I have only spoken the truth.' Mitrasharma resumed his journey. He met the second cheat who was waiting for him. The second cheat said - 'O Brahmin! Why are you carrying a dead calf on your shoulder?' The second cheat also derided at Mitrasharma. Mitrasharma gave him the same reply that it was a goat and not a dead calf. Mitrasharma went ahead and met the third cheat who was waiting for him. The third cheat said- 'Why are you carrying a donkey on your shoulder?' Now, Mitrasharma became confused. He threw down the goat and went away. The three cheats had a grand feast that day. After completing the story the old minister said - 'One should not have enemity even with small creatures who are united otherwise he would meet the same fate of the snake who was killed by an army of ants. Meghavarna curiously asked about the story. The old minister narrated the following story - SNAKE AND THE ANTS There used to live a snake named Atidarp in a hole. He had an enormous size. One day he tried to come out of his hole from some other exit which was too narrow for his size. The snake got wounded and started to bleed. The smell of the blood invited the ants. They swarmed all over the snake and began to bite at its wounds. This made the snake writhe in pain. Ultimately, the snake could not bear the pain and died. After narrating this story, the old minister Sthirjivi revealed his plan to kill the owl. He said to Meghavarna - 'Treat me as if I were your enemy. Put some blood on my body and push me down from the tree. I would try to find out the place where the owl lives taking his detective into my confidence. You and all the other crows go to the Rishimukh Mountain to live for the time being. We will attack the owls during the daytime as soon as we come to know about their hideout. Meghavarna followed his instructions. Both of them started a mock fight. Meghavarna poured some blood on his body and pushed him down. Meghavarna then flew away to Rishimukh Mountain along with the other crows. Krikalika - the detective of the owls was watching all that. He went back to the king of the owls and informed him that his enemy had fled away along with his enemy. The king of the owls thought that it was the right time to attack as the enemy was scared. When he did not find any crow on the tree he ordered his attendants to find out where the crows had gone. Sthirjivi - the old minister of the crows, who was acting as if he was severely wounded started making noise, to attract the attention of the owls. When the owls heard his voice they came towards him with the intention of killing him. Sthirjivi requested them to arrange a meeting with their king as he had some very important information to give. The owls took him to their king-Arimardan. In front of the owls' king, Shirjivi said - 'My king - Meghavarna wanted to attack you. I tried my best to stop him by saying that you were more powerful, so it would be better for him to seek your refuge. He thought that I was your detective and attacked me. I want to take my revenge you, just take me to his place.' After hearing this Arimardan consulted with his ministers what should be done. A minister whose name was Raktaksh- said that it would be better to kill him, as the enemy was weak at the moment. If this is not done then he might emerge as a potential threat in the future. 'Once doubts errupt between the friends, the friendship no longer remains the same just as the case was with the Brahmin and a cobra.' Arimardan was curious to know this story. Raktash narrated this story -
