Articles: TP Features | Policy or Posture? - Mr. Sreenivas YL

Dr Mnamohan Singh’s government despite the overt and covert bullying of left parties voted against Iran, thus, toeing the line of America. The left parties as usual made a lot of noise. Hours and hours of sound bytes and columns and columns of news print had been wasted reporting their anger over the stand of the government. The people thought since what the Indian government did was contrary to the ideological positions of the left parties and perhaps an indirect challenge, they would do something serious which would have larger repercussions. But nothing happened. Manmohan Singh is aware of the fact that the left who are used to enjoying the power without responsibility wouldn’t do anything that will bring down the government.
My aim is not to go into the merits and demerits of the government decision of voting against Iran but to understand the roots of the present vehement opposition of the visit of Mr. Bush. The Iran episode is followed by the issue of privatization of Indian Airports which had happened despite the fore warning of the left parties. FDI, privatization of insurance sector and on a host of other issues the left parties realized that the UPA government is functioning just as a Congress government than a government supported by the left
Suddenly the left parties realized that people are increasingly becoming suspicious of their statements and their stances. The Left not able to overcome the temptations of power and not able rein the central government has been simmering with frustration and has been waiting for opportunity. They realized that they lost the faith of the public and their statements are being viewed as jokes.
