If we, Indians have the vision, commitment and a clear strategy, we can in deed, become the global leader in organic farming and products. Here are the reasons supporting it.
- Though Western nations are the biggest market for organic products, their climatic conditions are not suitable for farming, especially organic farming. Most of the Western nations have cold climate for more than 9 months of the year.
- The land in Western nations is not as fertile as it is in India.
- Organic farming requires vast natural manure, which is not possible in those nations.
- Until as recently as 1960s, Indians practiced organic farming. In the past, Indians developed organic farming as a science and that wisdom is still available.
- Organic farming and the industries that turn organic produce into value-added organic products require millions of workforce, who constantly have to take care of the produce. This is the most important reason why it is not at all viable for Western nations to go for organic farming on a large scale. India, on the other hand, has around 70% of its population still living in villages and most of them are dependent on agriculture. There is a vast pool of unemployed workforce too.
Unlimited market:
The market for organic products is unlimited. It is not just limited to agricultural produce such as vegetables and fruits. Even milk and dairy products, meat (pork, beef, lamb etc), eggs and poultry, fish, prawns, oils, vegetable seeds, cotton, wine, wool, gardening plants and flowers come under organic products too. Value-added products made from all of these also have a huge market. So, even organic food processing industries will have immense future too.
