Vasanta Utsava Holi bears close similarities with the important ancient festival called Vasantotsava, an age-old tradition of celebrating the arrival of spring. This festival was celebrated as a day when people forgot caste and gender differences and were allowed many liberties, otherwise forbidden. And like any spring festival celebrated by ancient peoples all over the world, Vasantotsava also had certain rites. These include lighting up of fires, driving off demons, setting the normal orders in reverse, sporting something weird, having a community feast, and so on. The no-holds-barred play with colors between young men and women, taking out processions in weird gears, the greetings with yummy sweet dishes the bonfires in the evening before the full moon night of the Holi, are all leftovers of those ancient spring rites. Tips For a Safe Holi Holi is a festival of joy and colors. However, one should always be on alert to prevent any accident that may mar all the fun and change the scene to a sad one. Holi is meant to be a rough festival with tradition of applying colors to the guests and friends with or without their consent. Any kind of rudeness is totall forgiven on this day but these kinds of fun should also be participated under a certain limits. Fun, food and colors is all that should spread on this holy day of Holi. You should always remember to use these small precautions so that no one that you know or love gets hurt unknowingly. Playing, or, even watching Holi is great fun. Given here are some simple Do's and Don'ts to make the most out of Holi. • If you like to play it, make sure you take certain precautions for your safety. • Use a hat, cap or anything like that to protect your hair from being colored with hard-to-rinse dyes. • If you like to play Holi use dental caps to save your teeth from any unwarranted stains. • Put on your worst gears so that you won't have to take on the hassles of an immediate washing. • Rags like tattered denims, and all dark colored shades like black, blue, green, purple are highly recommended. • Try to save yourself from all possible attacks on the face. In case your attempts fail, keep your eyes and lips tightly shut if you are attacked on your face. • Keep the car windows thoroughly shut, even if you don't have an AC car. • Do not bump into frenzied groups or mobs if you take to streets. Better you cross the road to the sidewalk across. Or, simply stay at a safe distance. • Sunglasses go a long way in keeping your eyes safe from the harmful chemicals of the colors. • Wear full-sleeved t-shirts or shirts and leggings that cover your legs fully. Socks will be a good idea too. • If you are playing Holi, apply a thick layer of coconut or any oil on your body and hair till they glisten and you become slippery. • While washing off the color, use lukewarm water and keep your eyes and lips tightly closed.
