Daan:- It means sharing of one’s assets in the spirit of service and humility. This ( Daan) allows to develop a feeling of non-attachment to worldly possessions and acts in relieving stress on the mind. Satpatra daan without asking for name or fame and fruits is considered as best.
Tapa:- Tapa is self imposed discipline over body, mind and speech. It is necessary to curtail the Arishadvaragas( six crocodiles luring the man). Kama(passion), Krodha(anger),Moha(attachment),Matsar(envy) and Lobha(greed) are the six enemies. Tapa here does not mean going to forest wearing lion cloth nor is it growing beard or living in a hut or having a sad look on face. There are no prerequisites for doing practice of tapa. It can be practiced in your own home while fulfilling your worldly responsibilities. The idea is to minimize wants and needs of the body, control the out going tendencies of mind and discipline your sensory organs for mind is not burdened and creates a state of happiness without stress and strain.
Karma:- Karma means right action performed without attachment. Its purpose is self purification. At every step Vedas guide us as to whatis good karma and what is an evil karma. This step leads to become Karmayogi.
Swadhyaya:- It means self study for attainment of liberation. The Yoga tradition of Patanjali includes Swadhyaya in Kriyoga. It means understanding of real nature of Karma and how to apply our power of discrimination to differentiate between right and wrong, good and evil. Meditating on this is Swadhyaya. It can be practiced by means of repetition of any Vedic or Guru- ordained mantra with absolute attention.. It is not pure mechanical recitation but trying to identifying with the purport of the mantra simultaneously with repetition. This automatically unlocks abundant mental energy.
