What Holds Man’s Evolution?
The soul (Jivatma) is a minute fragment of the over-soul, the totality of the all pervading Consciousness (Paramatma). Manifesting itself through a physical form, the soul continues to evolve through eons of earthly time on the worldly stage as a separate entity until it finally awakens to its own Reality, God or Total Consciousness. The soul, in association with the physical body on its earthly sojourn, had identified itself with the body, giving an illusory feeling of separateness, and yet, in reality, has never ever been separate from the One Totality. In fact, the soul or the Atma is beyond the bounds of time and space, which exists only in the realm of the created.
At the time of death, when the soul is released from the physical body, it accepts the inevitable reality that its association with its temporal body is impermanent. It overcomes the desire to return to the body it had occupied, after an initial period of ‘confusion’ and ‘mental exhaustion’. Freed from its incarceration in the physical body the soul sees the larger picture of the Cosmic Drama with its expanded awareness. After some ‘rest’ and adapting to its ‘new surroundings’ the soul begins a totally different life in the astral plane. The writer knows of such experiences a few of his close friends have had after their death, through responsible mediums.
The causal body draws all its past impressions from the subtle body and carries them forward into several future lives on earth until all such impressions of separateness or ego of the soul dissolve in the vastness of the oneness. Because it carries the causes (impressions) of the past it is also termed the causal body, where the individual soul, now in the matrix of total consciousness, is preparing itself for another sojourn on earth. We can compare this to a driver who, not only identifies himself with his car, but even carries with him all his bad driving habits with him onto his new car, long after vacating the old car! Unless an actor remembers that he is just an actor on stage and has to act his role perfectly, he will get caught up with his momentary role and the costume he dons while on stage. Past memories and attachments hinder man’s evolution and hold him back in his ascent to Godhood.
