VIRTUOUS PIGEON AND THE FOWLER Once upon a time a fowler was wandering in the forest in search of some prey. He was so cruel that he had been expelled from his society. One day he caught a female-pigeon. Encaging the female pigeon, the fowler again started wondering in search of other preys. Suddenly, dark clouds gathered in the sky and it started raining heavily. The fowler became afraid and started looking out for some shelter. He saw a big tree and took shelter under it. When the rain stopped. He looked upward and said - 'Please listen, whoever is living on this tree. I have taken your refuge. I am suffering from hunger and cold. Please protect me.' On that tree lived the male pigeon who was wailing for his lost partner. The female pigeon recognized that tree and looking upwards she became pleased to see her husband. She requested her husband to save the life of hungry fowler. She said - 'Do not be angry with this fowler because he has encaged me. I am just reaping the fruits of my past Karma, you must do your duty and protect the life of this hungry fowler.' The male pigeon then requested the fowler what he could do for him. The fowler said that he was suffering from cold. The male pigeon brought spark of fire from somewhere and put it on the dry leaves. In a very short time, a fire was ignited which relieved the fowler from the severe cold. Now, the male-pigeon after realizing that there was no food to treat his guest become very sad. He decided to give up his life by jumping into the burning fire, so that his guest could survive by eating his flesh. He did so. The fowler was very ashamed of himself. He released the female pigeon from his cage and burnt his equipment’s which he used for trapping the birds. He decided to atone for his sins living an austere life. The female-pigeon could not tolerate her sorrows and jumped into the same fire. The fowler also sacrificed his life in the forest conflagration. After finishing this story, Kruraksha said - 'The life of a person, who has taken refuge should be protected even at the cost of one’s life.' Arimardan then consulted his third minister, named Deeptaksha. Deeptaksha was of the view that he (Sthirjivi) was not worth killing because - Deeptaksha then narrated the following story - THE OLD MERCHANT AND HIS YOUNG WIFE There used to live an old merchant named Kamatur in a city. One day his wife died. After many days he married a young woman who was the daughter of a poor grocer giving lot of wealth as a dowry. His young wife was very unhappy with him. She never showed any sign of love towards him. Silently she used to curse the fate but she was unable to do anything. One night when the old merchant and his young wife were sleeping, a burglar broke into their house. When the merchant's wife saw the burglar, she became terrified and hugged the old merchant tightly. The old merchant was surprised at that, as she never showed any kind of love towards him earlier. He started looking all around him. He also saw the burglar. The old merchant was very happy that because of the burglar, his young wife had embraced him for the first time. He thought that if the burglar comes daily, his young wife would embrace her daily too. So he requested the burglar - 'Take whatever you wish but please visit our home daily.' After completing his story, Deeptaksha said - The merchant had considered the thief as his benefactor even though he was a petty thief, so what to say about this person (Sthirjivi) who has taken our refuge. We can use him to our benefit. So according to me he (Sthirjivi) should not be killed. Now Arimardan asked his fourth minister whose name was Vakranas about his opinion. 'Difference between the enemy ranks very beneficial to the opponents. Because in this way the thief pardoned somebody’s life and a demon saved the lives of two bullocks.' Arimardan curiously asked about that story. Vakranas narrated the following story -
