She tells him frankly that he will never understand what a great fortune it is for a woman to enjoy the love of a man who would not leave her side even for a minute. As for behaving like animals, she reveals that even her pleader husband behaved like that in the beginning of their marriage, until his passion wore off. Why didn’t society find fault with him then? She confides in him that when compared to her “sacred” married life, she is much happier now. She now has an opportunity to fulfil her desires honestly and courageously. As for the difference between animals and humans, she says that she used to live a life far worse than animals earlier but now she lives like an animal and this life is far better. She is not worried about her appearance either. If she looks beautiful to her Ameer, that is more than enough. In any case, her lawyer-husband had no use for her beauty. He used to pay no attention to her beauty brought about by rich clothes and jewellery. No, she would not like to return to her husband; it would be a virtual hell for her, apart from being socially unacceptable. She is sure of Ameer’s everlasting love for her and if ever he deserted her she would rather end her life than return to her husband. Her entire value system has now changed, looking at the world as she does, through the eyes of Ameer. But she does not want to marry Ameer. That would once again suck her into the rut and quagmire of false values. Her uncle leaves, angry and frustrated. Suddenly Ameer is a changed man. He has taken a fancy for the daughter of the “hides saheb” in the neighbouring village and is now negotiating with her through the 16-year-old boy, Meera. Rajeswari secretly follows Meera one day and ferrets out the truth from him. Rajeswari’s immediate reaction is one of jealousy. She feels that Ameer has betrayed her and is very angry with him. She tells herself, for one who sexually desired her, knowing well that she was somebody else’s wife, is it surprising that he should now lust after another woman?
