HERMIT AND THE MOUSE There used to live a hermit named Shalankayan. One day he saw a small mouse, who was being carried by a hawk. At that time he was going towards the Ganges for his bath. Taking pity on the mouse, he rescued it from the talons of the hawk. He brought the small mouse to his hermitage. By his spiritual powers, the hermit transformed that small mouse into a beautiful girl. When the girl grew young, the hermit began to search for a suitable groom for her. He thought that the sun would be an ideal match for her. He invoked the Sun with mantras. When the sun appeared, he said to the girl - 'Are you interested in marrying the Sun- who illuminates the whole world.' The girl showed her reluctance. She said that the Sun would be too hot for her to bear. The Sun too said that the cloud would be a more ideal match for her ...'because he is more powerful than me.' The hermit then invoked the cloud. The girl again showed her reluctance saying that the cloud was like a vagabond. The cloud too said that the mountain was more powerful than him. The hermit invoked the mountain but the girl refused to marry saying that the mountain was too heavy and she would be crushed under his weight. The mountain told that the mouse was more powerful than him, ...'because he is capable of digging up holes even through me.' The hermit then called a mouse, when the girl was asked about her opinion. She happily agreed to marry the mouse. The hermit transformed her again into a small mouse and married her to the mouse. After completing his story Raktaksha said - 'The nature of a man remains unchanged.' But Arimardan did not pay any heed to him and Sthirjivi was taken to their cave with full honour. Arimardan instructed his attendants that Sthirjivi should be given a place of his liking. Sthirjivi thought that it would be better for him to stay outside the cave as it would help him to execute his plans without being noticed by anybody. He said to Arimardan - 'O Lord! Even though I am your well-wisher but still the fact remains that I belong to your enemy’s camp. So, it would not be proper for you to allow me to live inside your cave. I would consider myself fortunate if I am allowed to stay at the door of your cave.' Arimardan agreed, Sthirjivi was given variety of dishes to eat. Within a few days, he became fat. Raktaksh did not like this. He said to the ministers: 'All of you including the king are fools. It has rightly been said first of all I am the fool, secondly the fowler is fool too, then the king and the ministers are fool. All of us belong to the same team of fools.' All the owls were very surprised but they did not understand anything. They requested him to elaborate whatever he had said. Raktaksh then narrated the following story- THE BIRD WITH GOLDEN DROPPINGS There used to live a bird named Sindhuk in the forest at the foothills of a mountain. Its droppings had the unique quality of getting transformed into gold as soon as they touched the ground. One day a fowler saw this strange incident and trapped the bird in his net and brought to his home. At home, the fowler put the bird in a cage. Though the fowler was happy that he would get gold everyday but at the same time he was also worried that once the king came to know about this miraculous bird, he would not only lose the bird but also might be hanged. So he decided to present that bird to the king himself. He went to the king and told about the bird’s unique quality. The king became happy. He instructed his minister to see that the bird was kept with great care. But the minister said - 'O King! It is not proper to encage this bird. I do not believe this fowler. The bird should be set free.' The king instructed to set the bird free. The bird then flew away and sat on the main gate of the palace and said - 'First of all I was the fool, secondly the fowler was the fool, thirdly the king was the fool and fourthly the ministers were fools. Saying this the bird flew away. One must not easily believe other without applying one’s own intelligence After Raktaksha had finished his story. Arimardan was still unconvinced. Raktaksha then decided to go to some other cave along with his well wishers. He said - 'A person who does not think to solve his most serious problems is sure to regret later on. I have passed my whole life in this forest and now grown old but never in my life I have heard a cave talking.' All the owls asked about the story of a cave that talked. Raktaksh narrated the following story -
