For the first time in months she also thinks that although there is much that is abhorrent in marital life, there are in it unbreakable bonds which are forged and fostered by the passage of time. Is it that her uncle was right? “These feelings of Rajeswari are not meant to support the institution of marriage,” avers K.V. Ramana Reddy, “They are intended to indicate its strength.” She faces Ameer and lets loose a volley of abuse. But in answer to her, he just cries. She at once softens towards him and asks him if he has such a strong desire for the Muslim girl. When he answers in the positive she instantaneously takes the decision to bring about their union. She tells herself that by converting her sorrow into happiness, she is now going to take part in his happiness. The next day she goes to the village with Meera, the first ever time she has entered a village after she has moved in with Ameer. She meets the Muslim girl and persuades her to accept the love of Ameer. The following day, while Ameer and the girl make love right in her presence, she experiences pangs of death. But she knows it only too well that the affair will not last long. She in fact goes into ecstasy at the thought of sacrificing her everything for Ameer. She even loves the Muslim girl because she has been desired by her Ameer. Her romantic idea of herself as a self-sacrificing woman surfaces here again. True to her expectation, Ameer is disenchanted with the girl within days. Subsequently, when the girl visits him in the hut he refuses to have anything to do with her. He tells Rajeswari later that the girl’s love is possessive, even aggressive, and therefore not worth cherishing.
