His relationship with her is one of slavish love and he is extremely possessive and protective of her. He makes arrangements for her security since her presence in the “maidanam” has provoked the interest of some undesirable characters in her. Apart from giving her a knife for self-defence he secures the services of an Amazon of a woman to guard her during the nights. He constantly finds fault with Ameer for deserting her and calls him many names.
Rajeswari, on her part, is frequently reminded of Ameer and she even thinks of ending her life so that on his return he would wander the plain in great remorse. She reveals to Meera the real reason for Ameer’s desertion, namely her pregnancy, only after quite some time. Meera promptly brings a woman to help her get rid of the pregnancy. It is at this point that Rajeswari begins to think about the practical problems involved in bringing up a child. How would she support a child? The child would almost surely ruin her and Ameer’s happiness and love. If the child is going to be responsible for the destruction of love between them, there is no point in keeping the pregnancy. Moreover, the child will force her to re-establish her ties with society from which she has moved too far away.
She thus finally agrees to undergo abortion. But it turns out to be an excruciatingly painful experience. For three days and nights she is almost in a delirium and to add to her owes she is attacked by a lecherous intruder. Meera is by her side all the time, sharing her pain, trying to reach comfort to her and warding off the intruder.
