| thanks you mr yuga and others, I think I got a scoop of the mono-tone and stereo-type icecreams!
*puts the ol' speakers for sale on e-bay*

If 5.1 is nothing but 2 channels broken into 6, why 2 channels then why not just one? Whats the difference between mono and stereo? Can mono be split into stereo?
Posted by: FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION At: 14, Jul 2005 6:23:45 AM IST Hmmm Don't Know About In Cars Yugaa.
Posted by: Mr. Raj Raj At: 13, Jul 2005 11:58:29 PM IST The Format Consists Of Three Speakers Across The Front And Two Speakers In The Rear. The .1 Is A Sixth channel Called An LFE That Is Sent To A Subwoofer.
Get a 5.1 Stereo Receiver And Hook Speakers To It. Your Laptop O/P Goes As I/P To The 5.1 Stereo Receiver.
There Are Plenty Wireless Speakers Available In The Market.
If You Are Trying To Build Your Own, That's Whole Different Story.
Posted by: Mr. Raj Raj At: 13, Jul 2005 8:04:33 PM IST how do I get 5.1 channels from the audio out, mic jacks of a pc/laptop and how do I mix them into, say an optical or an RCA cable, are there such converters/cables like rca to multiple pins?
next, any thoughts on wireless audio transmission and reception?
Posted by: FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION At: 8, Jul 2005 5:19:22 AM IST Thank you for the appreciation ,I am sorry abt the spelling mistakes ,but typing a lengthy post is an ordeal ,and I dont make much use of the preview function .
Well ,the aux units are sometimes graphic units or dsp units ,but ,even with the aux ,the tape unit or the cd unit of yours will need to have atleast an input . most of the inputs are typically 750 mV ,so with an aux unit you can couple a lot of outputs to a single input in the cd unit . some aux units can be used just before the amps ,but ,you cannot control the inputs from the tape/cd unit ,you will have to control manually from the aux/dsp unit ,which would complicate things .
most of the desktops till the 478 pentium use the aux ,mic sockets for output of 5 channel audio .the latest lga775 chipset motherboards from intel have seperate outputs for each channel ,its like you get 7 sockets on a motherboard for audio ,where you have pins for the front ,rear, centre and subwoofer channels .
hey ,with regard to fm xmitters you will have to get a stereo type ,dont buy a mono version .
Its possible to draw the output of your car stereo ,but ,there is a limitation if you dont want to open up anything . you will not be able to get the front audio from the speakers . To get the Rear audio ,open the trunk of your car so that you can clearly see the bottom of the speakers at the rear . Each speaker will be connected by 2 wires with a spade terminal . you can either get a spade terminal lugs wire ,so as to lift off the outputs from the speaker wire ,else you can simply twist a wire in parellel to the speaker terminals .
Be sure to get a speaker of more than 4 ohms ,preferably 8 ohms ,so that you dont damage the amp/tape unit of your car .
A couple of illustrations would help ,but ,i dunno where to post the pics .sorry abt that
Posted by: Mr. Pit and the Pendulum At: 7, Jul 2005 9:20:49 AM IST at this point I dont think I would wanna mess with the amps and lamps of the system without having knowledge about em. but hey, you must know that all the great details you posted are appreciated!
one of the pros at a store told me theres something like an aux unit that can sit behind the deck and its gonna have pins(or holes) sticking out where I can shove my input, he said it works in aux mode, any thoughts on this?
mic socket can be used as output???? this is really interesting as I'd have never known this, the basic understanding is that input holes are purely for input and ya cant draw any output, so whats needs to be done to convert the audio out in 4 channels using the stereo hole and mic hole, dont know if I wud have any use of it but sounds like a fun experiment.
regd fm xmitters, they are very much legal as they are sold in stores like costco too, basically they transmit in the range that the fm radio can receive between 88.3 and 100.something so I'm guessing its legit stuff.
any thoughts on drawing output off of car stereo? again, without fiddling with amps and under-the-carpet manuevres, hehe.
thanks p&p!

skipping all the other options...
successful or not, the last one seems to be the only thing viable at present, hehe!
*wonders how to implement deliberate misspellings*
Posted by: FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION At: 6, Jul 2005 11:57:58 PM IST .DTS ,THX,DOLBY srround have a specific hardware built into them and as such ,that is the real 5 channel or 7 channel sound avaliable . If your laptop has only stereo output ,then you will have to set your cassete /cd player to stereo mode ,when you play from your laptop .
most of the tape deck/cd units sport inputr pins in the back o the unit ,if you could lemme know the model and the brand ,i did be glad to check out the locaton of the pins .
again,if you can supply me with the details of your amps ,in case you have installed them ,its an after market job , then I will be able to point out the lcation of the input pins and the preset volume control .
The amps are ussually located in the trunk of the car ,but some amps might be located under the hood ,they draw a lot of current ,thats why under the hood .
Fm transmitters are good ,in fact they can transmit with much lesser noise lvel compared to a mp3 player noiselevel vs music ,but ,dont let the cops arrest you for illegally transmitting radio ,lol ,end up cooling heels ,trying to listen to usic from your laptop ,lol .If you think you wont have problems transmitting ,then you can g ahead ,but ,uhave to go through a lot of trials ,to check out .
CD changers are wired from the control unit ,cd/tape unit and you can see the wires running underneath the carpet on the floor of your car ,You can also see speaker wires running to the back oif your trunk .
If you need to create a home theatre like effect ,you can do it from your car tape unit ,if it has the functions ,else
you will need a 5.1 ,7.1 decoder unit for cars ,alpine, pioneer ,blaupunkt makes them ,plus you will need 5 amplifiers of medium wattage and then you will need a high power amp for the subs .You will need in total 11 speakers plus a sub for 5.1 channel audio . Get the ADIRE Audio SHIVA series of subs ,its got the highest soundpresseure level ,if you are going to go in for a sub .
to get 5.1 from your laptop ,u will have to use the mic input pins also . when its in the 5.1 mode ,you will not be able to use the mic function of your laptop . you will have 4 output functions ,and if your laptop has aux sound input then you will have to use that also .
many versions of mp3 players support 5.1 ,alternatively ,you can use an external usb sound card like he creative ones .
If you happen to be sucessful ,then you will need to get a new girl friend . lol
Posted by: Mr. Pit and the Pendulum At: 6, Jul 2005 10:37:02 AM IST aah finally some nerds show up here, good good.
--to play the mp3 files from your laptop in your car set ,frst ,let me know ,how many channels your car system has . next ,how many hannels of output does your laptop have ?--
car stereo has 6 channels(thats ironic innit?), if this is what the number of speakers add up to.
laptop has only one output and its stereo.
--If you have a cassete player then ,you will have tplay in stereo mode ,and for that you will need a stereo pin to RCA pin wire ,so as to connect your stero pin to the laptop and the RCA pins to your cassete player --
no cassette player, even if I had one how could I possibly input something into my CP where I dont see any pins(or holes as the case maybe)
--If you have sepeate amps for the speakers ,then you will need to connect the laptop to the amps directly ,but ,the volume controls will be with the laptop ,you will not be able to adjust the volume ,from the amps ,as they will be preset ,at the max --
what do you mean separate amps? and how do I connect laptop to amps directly, again no pins or holes that I can see from outside!
but if this means opening up the deck, then that is something I must consider as a fallback profession hehe.
--better still ,if you have doubts ,pet a professional source ,as you might end up frying your car power cables ,or you might even end up frying your laptop ,trying to figure out the inputs of the amp ,or the cassete player --
tried pros, everybody ends up suggesting me to replace my cd player with the mp3/cd player and do a bunch of rewiring that would add up the cost and it looks like that is the only solution without converting them wires into french fries!
--lastly ,it isnt worth ,undertaking such an exercise --
then whats the solution? I read about fm transmitters, how does that work? is it worth it? how do the cd-changers, the ones that sit in ur trunk, work?
this is not it, it gets better, next I would wanna wanna play movies from my laptop, or a personal dvd player, and create a home theater-like effect in the car!!! I guess most of it has to do with audio at present.
then I would wanna play the car radio in my wireless headphones, I know this is a bouncer, will bring it up later
if the DVDs can produce 5.1, how can one get 5.1 from the laptop?
my thanks to all the responses.
