HYDERABAD: The Official Language Commission, headed by A B K Prasad, has favoured introduction of Telugu as a medium of instruction even in private schools. They also wanted action to be taken against those shops and establishments which do not exhibit Telugu signboards. The commission which had its first sitting on Monday, recommended a dozen steps to improve Telugu as the official language in the state. Prasad and four other members of the panel submitted these recommendations to chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Wednesday. Talking to reporters, Prasad said teaching the language upto the fifth standard, as is the practice now, is not enough. "All developed countries like Japan, Germany and China conduct their higher education in their own language. We need to have Telugu medium of instruction at least upto the SSC level," he said. He also expressed concern over the neglect of the language in many corporate colleges, which were offering other scoring subjects at the Intermediate level. The government must intervene and ensure that Telugu was given equal importance, he said. Welcoming the chief minister's announcement on Ugadi that the usage of sign boards in Telugu, as per the Shops and Establishments Act, should be enforced strictly, Prasad said Karnataka could be emulated in this regard. He said the Kannada Bhashabhivruddhi Samstha, the official language commission of that state, had asked the government to cancel the licenses of those shops and establishments which did not use Kannada signboards. This resulted in such establishments falling in line. Prasad said the state Assembly should pass a resolution asking the Centre to bestow classical language status on Telugu, at par with Tamil. The chief minister should write to the Centre for this purpose, he said. Prasad said the commission will begin compiling a compendium of technical words used by several departments. Though, about 28 departments had individual compendiums, they need to be updated.

Let me put this in English, even though it violates the rules of this thread. ACTUALLY, THIS MACHINE OF MINE IS UNABLE TO DISPLAY TELUGU FONTS FOR SOME REASON. IT IS DISPLAYING ALL SPECIAL CHARACTERS (EVEN WHEN I SWITCH THE FONT OFF). I THINK SOME COMPONENT NEEDS TO BE DOWNLOADED. I DO KNOW TELUGU SCRIPT AND PLEASE .. PLEASE BEAR WITH ME UNTIL I CHANGE MY MACHINE. IN FACT I HAVE TO GO TO ANOTHER MACHINE TO READ WHAT YOU PEOPLE HAVE POSTED IN TELUGU. Newayz, here is what I posted earlier: Background: There is a significant chunk of population that speaks Telugu in Tamilnadu. But because of lack of opportunities to speak Telugu, they have learn Tamil and have been communicating in Tamil with others.. But alas! they are still treated as Telugu guys by Tamilians (even though they have been staying here for the oast few decades). This lead to a feeling among the Telugu population that there is no point in trying to be Tamilians anymore amd they should learn good Telugu. Some of them started looking out of people who can spread Telugu in Tamilnadu. Current Scenario & Requirement: A trust has been formed with a few concerned people to spread Telugu awareness in Tamilnadu, sans regionalism and without insulting or causing a rebellion against other languages. They definitely need some support from others too. So If someone is interested, one may please feel free to mail me. Please remember this is not a fanatic activity - the objective is jus to spread Telugu Knowledge among the "INTERESTED" people. The trust has also identified two districts for the activities. IT IS A NON-POLITICAL MOVEMENT, EVEN THOUGH A FEW POLITICAL PERSONALITIES MAY BE INVOLVED. If someone is interested in joing the group, one may mail me. Hoep I am clear enough this time and I shall try to post my messages in Telugu Script as possible.
