Another US Currency puzzle...
Using the US coins (half-dollar, quarter, dime, nickel and penny), what is the maximum amount you can have in your pocket to be not be able to give somebody a change for a dollar, half-dollar, quarter, dime or a nickel?
(Taking break for 1 hour now)
Sekhar, keep your answer...let others post various answers too :)
Posted by: Hytech At: 6, Nov 2003 0:07:21 AM IST a + b + c + d = 9
25a + 10b + sc + d = 29
subtracting first from second
24a + 9b + 4c = 20
only possible solution for the above equation is
a = 0
b = 0
c = 5
and hence d = 4
Posted by: Raj Sekhar At: 6, Nov 2003 0:00:38 AM IST 841 = 29*29
sum of 8 coins = 29
5*5 + 4*1 = 29 and 5 + 4= 9
no dimes at all...

Next...
Apparao and his TP members board a bus in New Jersey. They all give the same 9 coins (US) to Subbarao who is the driver. The driver gets a total of $8.41. How many dimes did Subbarao receive?
(US coins: quarter-25cents, dime-10cents, nickel-5cents and penny-1cent)
