It may be little solace to the grieving family of the “meritorious and ever-smiling” Nandita — as the associate principal of NPS, Shantha Chandran would like to remember her — that their eldest daughter scored a high percentage in her board exams.
The teenager allegedly ended her life by hanging, on Monday afternoon at her Indiranagar residence.
Around four kilometres from Nandita’s house is the residence of 18-year-old Archana Dakshinamurthy. On Monday, when Archana’s parents wished her luck for her PUC results before leaving the house for work, they were sure that their daughter would at least get a good second division. “We told her that her elder brother Lokesh would let her know her result. From 12.30 pm onwards we kept calling her, but there was no response. Sensing something wrong, I left office at 3 pm. Before going home, I went to a cyber cafe and checked her result. She had failed. I returned home and found her hanging. She left a note for us in which she said she was sorry,” narrates Archana’s father Dakshinamurthy, who works at Shyamala Reddy Dental College.
“She wanted to be an engineer and was sure that she would get a free seat. Archana had appeared for the CET and was preparing for COMED-K,” he says. On Monday evening, three students who attempted suicide after the PUC results were announced, were brought in to the multi-disciplinary ICU at the Manipal Hospital. “While one of them had taken some medicines meant for her relative, the second girl had swallowed some anti-convulsant drugs and the third, a boy, had consumed phenyl.
The second survivor is unconscious. Though she is stable, she is on the ventilator. It will take her around 48 hours to regain consciousness,” says Dr Somnath Chatterjee, head of MICU. The first survivor was discharged on Tuesday and the third one refused to get admitted for personal reasons. On the possible effects of these drugs, Dr Chatterjee and Dr Padma Kumar, a consultant at the hospital, feel that the boy needs to be “very careful because phenyl could burn his food pipe and the stomach lining. In the case of the girl on the ventilator, the drugs can affect her heart.” Why did these students take the extreme step? “Lack of coping abilities, inability to face parents, unrealistic expectations, escape from humiliation and an intense self hatred,” says psychiatrist P S Murthy.
