AGENCIES[ SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 2006 02:56:57 PM]
NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD: Indian engineer K Suryanarayana, abducted by Taliban in Afghanistan two days ago, was killed by his kidnappers on Sunday, evoking a strong condemnation by New Delhi which termed it as a "pre-meditated" and "brutal" act of terrorism by the militia and "its sponsors".
The beheaded body of the 41-year-old Suryanarayana was found by a police patrol this morning in Hassan Karez area in southern Zabul province where he had been kidnapped on Friday evening along with his Afghan driver.
Taliban yesterday had threatened to kill him if their demand that all Indians leave Afghanistan was not met by 7 PM on Sunday.
Suryanarayana, a Comunications engineer worked with a Bahraini firm which was contracted by Afghani mobile phone company Roshan to help expand its network.
The news of his killing was received with immense shock by his family in Hyderabad and his wife Manjula slumped while their three children wept inconsolably. Suryanarayana's mother Ananthalaxmi became hysterical on hearing the sad news.
A shaken Suryanarayana's brother-in-law Krishna said he suspected that the engineer had been murdered on Friday itself. Krishna said he had feared for the worst when Suryanarayana's colleagues asked for his identification marks on Friday. They said of the three vehicles gone out to the project site in Zabul, only two had returned.
Suryanarayana's father Chandrasekhar had made a fervent plea to his son's captors for his release yesterday.
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh met Suryanaraya's family and promised Rs 5 lakh compensation, a job to his deseased wife and facilities for the education of his children.
President A P J Abdul Kalam and prime minister Manmohan Singh condemned the incident. Singh said killing of an innocent Indian civilian was an "inhuman act".
Confirming his death, Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran said the "brutal" killing was a "pre-meditated" act committed before the Indian team could reach there which demonstrated that the Taliban were not interested in negotiations.
"The government of India is appalled by this dastardly and inhuman act of terror on the part of the Taliban and its sponsors," Saran said and asserted that the government and people of India "will not bow to such acts of terrorism".
Terming as "outrageous" the Taliban's demand that all Indians leave Afghanistan, the Foreign Secretary emphasised that India will "continue its fraternal assistance to the people of Afghanistan in their endeavours to bring peace, stability and economic recovery to their country ravaged by years of conflict."
The body of Suryanarayana will be flown to New Delhi tomorrow after which it will be sent to Hyderabad for last rites.
This is the second such incident in six months. In November last, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) jawan M R Kutty, working on construction of highway between Zaranj and Delaram, was kidnapped by the Taliban and his beheaded body was found three days later.
A Taliban spokesman told foreign news agencies in Kandahar that Suryanarayana was shot dead when he tried to escape after hitting one of their men.
Afghan interior ministry officials, however, rubbished the Taliban claim of accidental killing, pointing out that the body was found beheaded.
In view of the incident, security measures of all Indians will be reviewed and strengthened, he said. Private companies employing Indian personnel have been advised to put in place comprehensive security measures.
In a statement here, Janata Party President Dr Subramanian Swamy decribed it as a 'dastardly' act and said the Union Government must take appropriate action to prevent such incidents from recurring. "All organisations in the country should condemn this dastardly killing," he added.
Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee condemned the "heinous act of terrorism" and expressed condolences to the family of the bereaved.
