General Forum: Religion | What is Religion.... Case Study - Hinduism | |
| What Vinay says is correct, the topic aims at getting ways of viewing a religion.
There have been views that,
(a) Religion has to do with principles it claims as holy
(b) Religion has to do with GOd
(c) Religion has to do with economic status of the person.
(d) A popular comment about Hindu religion is - It covers every aspect of life.
These are the different angles at looking at religion
Now, the issues we have to check are -
1) Are these are the only factors that contribute to different views of Religion??????
2) Given a set of factors which can describe the religion in completeness.....what is the effect of each factor????
I guess, this would give a proper understanding of what religion is ........................
Posted by: Ms Samatha G At: 30, Jan 2002 8:23:19 PM IST It seems u people donot have the idea of religion (sorry i too) When u really need to see god or reach his abode u must be happy with ur poverty.(not spiritual poverty but the material poverty it is not development to wlak with four legs(cars) as dogs and other animals do.
Be calm and quite.
Do ur jobs as tamaraaku meeda neeti bottula.

U have freedom untill u select a guru then u have to blindly follow him the real good guru from a nice parampara will lead u to god not with ur mone but with his daya and karuna and ur practise. Posted by: Mr Narciso Ceschi Berrini At: 26, Jan 2002 4:01:53 AM IST I would like to mention a line from a talk given Swami Vivekananda :-
"We cant preach philoshophy for an empty stomach".
Its true that economics play a vital role in viewing religion. A rich can see religion as Gold... but a poor may not. (note the "may").

Posted by: Mr Murali Krishna Achari At: 22, Jan 2002 12:41:13 PM IST hi,
hinduism is the life style of indians. we can not find it as
simple religoin like others. it is the soul of india. body can not exist with out soul.
people who dont know the depth of hindusim are makeing
silly things as you said( like sandels and toilets.
). we have to show our simathy on those mindless people.
a true hindu can forgive anybody.
let them do what they can do aganest hinduism.
but one thing is true.
no hindusim no other religions,
no hindusim no peace.
no hindusim no love.
no hindusim no world.
if you want to be a true hindu, forgive the people who hate hindusim.

Hey I'm aware for Idols images printed on
sandels and Toilet mats , and I agree with Deepa's idea that people are taking advantage of our tolernce (but one of the Shoe companies in India "Bata" replied to that by printing US maps on slippers ), the only way to stop it is by taking patent rights on those images which indian Govt. has to do .
but at the other end i even observed in stores like "Marshals" they selling great Copper idols of lord krishna Ganesh, Laxmi and they're treating those idols with respect and when i went to buy one of them they're asking me all the details so that they can explain to other american customers .
and as samatha said i'll defiantly put this matter in front of our Telugu Association.
Posted by: Mr Ravi M At: 7, Dec 2001 11:37:10 PM IST Ms Deepa,
its sad to hear such news. Well, do you have any particular details about the ones you said.......I guess if we know about them in more detail we can complain it somewhere. I think there will be some Indian associations in US which would react immediately if we complain.
May we can even bring this issue in public too!!!!
well, what I want to say is....if you can gather more details pls take the pain to do it. Lets see if we can do something about this.
Posted by: Ms Samatha G At: 7, Dec 2001 11:03:04 PM IST Good analysis Ms Samatha....i want to share with all some thing which i read about Hinduism .....God is considered as "infinite" and infinite can not be measured arithmetically. Though we can not divide , subtract or add to infinite....it can be represented in different ways....So the ONE supreme shakti or power or God is worshipped in different ways.
Now coming to idol worship ......we are asked not to worship idols but worship God in the form of idol. Swami Vivekananda once said "if a person wants to drink milk he uses cup as he can not drink it directly....for a human mind which is usually unsteady , there should be a visible form or idol . The idol is similar to vessel which enables a man to drink the milk"
Now coming to the most imp point.......there is a constant effort in west in defaming Hinduism....i heard that in Disney world there is an idol of lord Ganesha in one of the jungle rides. There are no other icons belonging to any other religion. some where i read that India Times published a front page article that a Newyork shoe store was selling sandals with images of Shiva, Ganesh and Gayatri for 5$. And a designer toilet seat manufacturer is marketing toilet seats with images of ganesha and Kali.
DOn't u think they are disgusting and perverted acts. Can any one imagine such things happening in or with other religions or religious icons? Is it just because "hinduism" is a peaceful "ism" or "peaceful religion"? Are all these people taking advantage of tolerance of Hinduism in general and Hindus in particular ?
I request the readers of Telugupeople.com to respond to this with open mind . I was deeply hurt and felt humiliated when i read all these things and i could not do any thing excepting writing letters of protests.........some thing is better than nothing.
Posted by: Ms deepa v At: 7, Dec 2001 9:47:02 PM IST heyyyyy all,
I guess there is a talk about "why Hinduism has so many Gods and so many forms".
Hinduism is a unique religion which has different forms for different classes of people (classes are not necessarily the economic classes... neither am I talking about castes. depending on context the class definition varies). Its the religion where people worship everything on earth from stones, cows, trees to "nothing","everything", the space. Its allows people to see God in any way they like to see HIM.
For a farmer, the better way of introducing God is, as someone who controls the various aspect reltaed to crop, like Vana Deva, Bhudevi etc etc....so they find worshiping a tree as more appropriate form of worship
For a person who earns his living on the milk he sells...God is in form of Cow. So he worships Cow.
For a King God is in form of weapon and Shakthi.......he worships that
For a philoshoper God is in form of Soul.
For a Saint it is "nothing" .... the darkness which they can see when they close their eyes and the space which he cant see and everything he can see. So he worships everything.....
Thus, Hinduism is a great religion which considers every level of people and is flexible enough for everyone to understand it. What ever form a person worships or what ever way he worships Hinduism says its all the same. Thats the power of the religion to understand the society and provide means for all kinds of people of society. Look, if one says that God is what you can see him when you close your eyes; to an ordinary person who is not capable of understanding things, it doesn't make sense. Thus this religion makes it easier for him to understand by showing something related to their lives as form of religion. and Idols are a way so that an "ordanary person" can concentrate on God. For a saint an Idol is not required at all. Idols are on different forms so that, it makes sense for that particular part of society.
Hence the concept of "Lot of Gods" is a great plus point to religion.
Be proud to be a Hindu! :-)
