Actually, Sri Krishna Devaraya (who is a Kannadiga) told this first time. So it ramained as a saying in Telugu.
I don't know who said that Telugu is Italian of the East - but there are so many similarities in Telugu and Italian. They have "Rao" in their names. Recently in a USA super market, I saw some food item that says "Rao's ...." - it is from Italy. Some more Sir names (the family names) looks very similar to Telugu sir names. May be that's the reason they would have said Telugu is the Italian of the East.
Actually, no body agrees that somebody else's language is better than their mother tongue - ofcourse, business point of view is different and Universal language English is an exception.
Ask one Tamilian or Kannadiga or a Maharashtrian or a person from Orissa - we will know the reality...
We are proud of our language so we keep saying this "Desa Bhaashalandu Telugulessa".
I will definitely say "Desa Bhaashalandu Telugulessa" throughout my life - don't ask me the reasons!!!
