'If it is an English convent..in English.'
But why are the children speaking in Telugu involuntarily? Because, for them, speaking in Telugu is natural & in-built. Just because they speak in Telugu, that does not mean that English is 'lost' to that extent.
Then, what is this 'punishment if Telugu is heard in the premises?' criterion?
I feel the best way to pick up English conversation is to choose one chum out of the friends' lot and communicate with him only English. We tried it successfully. Though our medium of instruction was Telugu, we did not face much of problem during transition to English. The problem is more psychological than real.
Point #5 of WYD
The 'tendency' to revert to Telugu given in #4 proves beyond doubt that my Point #5 has some basis.
My intention is not to discourage study of English. Now it is the prerequisite for making a livelihood. Only unfortunate thing is that parents and children are put to a lot of confusion by the Convent managements on one hand and the successive governments on the other.
Another misconception is regarding the 'accent'. Recently I studied in one of the news papers that even typical Indian accent is acceptable in many countries. So, we need not have any sort of inferiority complex regarding our accent & diction.
(In fact, Indians' accent of English is so much complete, as it suggests 'all the leeters in all the words' instead of keeping some silent.)
Posted by: SATYA RAMA PRASAD KALLURI At: 4, Aug 2005 10:18:35 AM IST daddy , i wouldnt accept your point with regard to speaking telugu at school ,i mean the convents . The basic fact is english is more of slang these days ,rather than the saxony type of english that the british have .
secondly ,to identify a group of people from the same place or from a community ,then I see no harm in speaking in telugu ,well atleast i yearn to and look forward to speaking to a telugu soul ,since i happen to live in chennai .
Speaking in telugu or english is more subjective ,ie. it is with regard to where you are gonna be put up . The majority of the people from Andhra pradesh will definitely be staying in Andhra pradesh ,and it is of more importance that they lean the language than english ,after all anything in english can be translated and adapted in telugu .
