I think Sastri garu was talking about it from a "SOCIAL" perspective, not the "LEGAL" one!

My opinion ( Please correct me if you find me wrong) 2. Change of surname: During those days, the surname of a person used to be the name of that person's village/town. When a woman was born she used to be with her parents at the village of her parents .. hence she used to have her parents surname as her surname initially .. But when she got married and had been shifted to her husband's village . Since she was no more an inhibitant of the old village, she used to derive the surname of her "in-laws" ... _____________________________________________ 1. About age difference (I am not sure) Traditionally, it has been a practice to respect the elders .. so the male, being the head of the family in a typical patriarchial society, needed to be older than the female so that his orders could be obeyed (Since many of the people used to get married when they were young and kids seldom disobey someone whoz elder to them) One more reason could be .. since the Male was responsible for safeguarding the interests of the family, they might have thought it would be easier for the older person to take the responsibilties than the younger
