i accept with you @malakpet for the 1st comment but not for the 2nd comment the colour of GOD depicted in all pictures is dark blue. but actually it is black. even if you see the gem blue, it appears as black not as blue. as i have already told it might be done just to reduce the racial discrimination based on colour.

"Blue and Blue, I Love You" - states a phrase. As god is the embodiment of love, blue can be attributed to HIM. (Ofcourse at that time, this phrase is not there). But this is the first thought that came to my mind as soon as I read this question.

Painting god with blue symbolises his OMNI-POTENT and OMNI-PRESENT status ,just like the sky and the oceans .

Good explanations than before. But I will still cross my fingers and wait for the one which can justify. Ofcourse all the views expressed here are convincing but still....

My guess is that, earlier days the colour is chosen based on the softness and it's visibility/match against multiple background of that time (mostly rock and white/light yellow???) Blue might be the best match for the backgrounds of that time and that custom may be continuing even today (Black isn't used as it may be difficult to pray during night when the visibility is less?? )

Dark color is used often with reference to Raakshasas ... perhaps Blue is used in paintings in order to differentiate the God from the Demons

To diffentiate that god cannot be weighed on par with humans, he is superior and hence given a different colour. He is supreme.
