| Gopika gaaru ! as you said we donot get god but we certainly gain by visiting temples and do puja's provided we meditate on the divine attributes of that diety in the temple .Swamy vivekananda said "God may be seen to be in the idol, but the idol is not to be treated as God."
Every saint has tried his best to lead the masses towards God by their preachings and teachings.

Posted by: Mr. jogarao pilla At: 17, Nov 2003 2:37:51 PM IST I too say that we go to temple to remind ourselves to God! but how many of us really experience the same tranquility and peace that we get during our standing before that idol who represents god to us once we leave that place.?That means that we get that feeling of devotion only in presence of a representation of god but not otherwise.
since our elders have suggested that one needs to keep his body and mind clean and calm,we try to keep ourselves clean and keep away from any un necessary thought but what happens when we learn about much superior means of getting that peace and tranquilty without the necessity of visiting a temple or idol worship but simple way of thinking and getting that internal condition which is much superior than the condition we experience by idol worship or any crude mechanical means of worship, by simple and easy practise of meditation?

Posted by: Mr. M Kumar N At: 16, Nov 2003 3:49:13 PM IST I said whether we achieve god by idol worship alone? i never said that idol worship is bad but through idol worship u can get an idea about god but somehow or other u need to pass that stage once u are oriented to god .Normally when we were small in age we used to play with dolls but once we grow up are we still attached to them? so as we grow up in age our attachments to things differ and we leave the old practises and adopt new trends according to the changed times/ages.
what we really need to develop is attachment with the God always by gifting away our heart without keeping it to ourselves like the great devotees like Meera who submitted themselves to god not minding any thing else.
what is left to the person who gifts away his tiny heart to achieve the most dearest objective of life ,namely God realisation?
where is the necessity of idol to one who loses his /her only heart to the divine?why should one feel to offer material gifts if the desire is really to merge in him in toto?
It is because that we still feel that we are different and in order to please him we need to offer presents and all other practises like homam and archana etc.. and all these practises are to please our senses only but not god!
we have to put efforts to get over this hang up and try simpler and subtler ways to reach him, and for that our spritual leadres have given the unique practise of meditation where we close our eyes to develop deeper visions of the Almighty.
