Posted by: Mr. Spider Man At: 24, May 2003 11:49:31 PM IST if the rough ball is in "D" group, then????
Posted by: Raj Sekhar At: 24, May 2003 11:35:55 PM IST Divide the 12 balls into 4 batches of 3 each. Lets name them A,B,C and D. Weigh A against B and A against C. Now, you know which batch has the rouge ball and whether it is heavier or lighter than the other balls. Pick 2 of the balls from the rouge batch and weigh them. If they are equal, the 3rd ball in that batch is the rouge otherwise, you know which one is the culprit.

You have twelve balls that weigh the same, except for one. This ball may be lighter or it may be heavier than the other eleven. You are given some scales to balance balls against each other. How do you discover the rouge ball, and whether it is heavier or lighter, with only three weighings ?
