| I think its any 3 of the nine integers!
I have a quick question too, but there was nobody to discuss with :(
In the exammple, if 4 and 7 were chosen then 1,10,13,16 and 19 are excluded. It is understandable that 1 and 10 cannot be included as 1,4,7 and 4,7,10 form APs, but how is 4,7,13 an AP? Doesnt AP mean constant difference b/w consecutive numbers?

next :
Find nine different integers from 1 to 20 (inclusive) such that combination of any three of the nine integers should not form an A.P.(arithmatic progression).
For example, if two of the integers chosen were 4 and 7, then that would preclude 1, 10, 13, 16 and 19 from being included.

Posted by: Aruna At: 13, May 2006 3:47:32 PM IST oops, my earlier answer was about the number of rounds! :-)
n-1 seems to be correct for # of games played!
Posted by: చంటోడు At: 13, May 2006 3:23:15 AM IST n/2 ? (excluding the last round where only 1 person remains)
Posted by: చంటోడు At: 12, May 2006 11:07:08 PM IST hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... loooong timee..
restarting with an easy one ::
A sports club organizes a tabletennis tournament. The tournament is
divided into rounds. If there are 2k or 2k + 1 competitors in a round,
the organizers draw k pairs who play against each other; the winner gets
into the next round, the looser is out. The one, who doesn't have a
pair, because there is odd number of competitors in that round, gets into
the next round automatically. In the first round, every competitor takes
part, and the tournament lasts until in the last round there is only one
competitor - the winner. How many games will be played, if the number
of participants is n?
