What's it about
The film has contrived storyline. You hardly comprehend what the real story is at the end of the story. It goes like this..
Murali Krishna (Balakrishna) comes to Hyderabad from Vizag to join her sister in a college. She joins in a college owned by Peddiraju (Shayaji Shinde). Jailed in a prison, Peddiraju asks his brothers to hunt for Murali Krishna. They finally find him in their own college. And it is later revealed that Peddiraju eyes on the land of Muralikrishna's grandfather (Rajan Dev). In another flashback, this grand man leaves his grandson as orphan but repents years later. The orphaned boy is raised by greedy drunkard (Prakash Raj). He sacrifices his life for this adopted family. But the family members only see him as a money-milking cow. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Peddiraju's sister. The rest of the film is how Muralikrishna takes on revenge on Peddiraju who killed off his grandfather.
Analysis
It has most absurd storyline. Actually it is too contrived and cooked up storyline to portray hero Balakrishna in a larger than life role. Not a single scene in the film has some novelty. Veerabhadra is at best can be called a soppy director's lousy attempt. It is a series of unrelated scenes and fight episodes unfolding on the screen with no coherence to the story. In one scene hero bashes up goons, and the immediate next scene you get to see a comedy and then a song.
In the recent past, all of Balakrishna's films bombed at the box-office because of unnatural storyline and overt drama with mindless action stunts. Sadly, Veerabhadra goes in same way. While the first half is just okay, the second half is unbearable.
What's hot!
Balakrishna has done neat job. His performance, Tanushree Dutta's sizzling appearance and Manisharma's music are main highlights. There is not much to rave about in this film. Though some of the scenes and dialogues might appeal to Balayya's hardcore fans but of general audiences it is a big letdown. Sada has got meatier role but it is Tanushree who walks with the hero in the end. Sada has done very massy role than her image. Shayaji Shinde's role is not etched well. Rest of the cast have not much to do in the film. Technically, cinematographer Ram Prasad has done good job.
What's not!
The entire film is hotchpotch of scenes and the amateurish handling of director A S Ravikumar Chowdhary make the film very painful to the common audiences. While Anjaneya Pushpananda's story itself is absurd one, the director's screenplay is sloppy. Prior to the release, a lot of hype was made about action episodes composed by Peter Hains but in the film you hardly find any 'new action sequences'.
Bottom line!
Another disappointing fare comes from Balayya.

What’s it about
The film is about an under cover police officer nailing the mafia leaders.
Two mafia leaders control Hyderabad city. One of the leaders Ali Bhai (Prakash Raj) operates from Dubai. A Romeo-like youngster Pandu (Mahesh) works for one of this mafia faction headed by Ali Bhai. Pandu falls in love with an aerobics teacher Sruthi (Illeana). But Sruthi finds too hard to digest his ‘rowdy ways’. A police Inspector (Asish Vidyardhi) harasses Sruthi on the other hand. As the film proceeds in this manner, it is later revealed that Pandu is not a rowdy but he is an undercover IPS police officer asked infiltrate int. The rest of the film is how this officer eliminates the mafia.
Analysis
It is a straight lift from 1997-released Hollywood flick, Donnie Brasco. The original was starred by Johnny Depp as undercover FBI agent (here Mahesh plays this role) and Al Pacino as the Mafia leader (Prakash Raj does it). Except that in original hero is a married guy and his undercover operations put him in emotional dilemma, the rest of the film is a straight copy of it.
In all Puri’s films you find – strong hero characterization and stylish presentation. Pokiri is no exception. Mahesh Babu’s role has all the verve to make his fans go in frenzy. Indeed, Mahesh has come up with a good performance. Though he has given better performances than this in the past, Pokiri is at best his film. The film mainly looks interesting when Mahesh comes on the screen.
Pokiri’s first half is interesting but in the second half the excessive action episodes and stretched out screenplay holds no interest.
It is Mahesh’s show all the way.
What’s hot!
Mahesh Babu’s performance, Illeana’s charm and Manisharma’s music are highlights. Illeana proves with this film that she has in it to go great places in Telugu films. She has also improved her acting skills. Shayaji’s Shinde role is good. Manisharma always comes up with good music for Mahesh films. In Pokiri, his re-recording work is excellent. Sham K Naidu’s cinematography is another asset.
What’s not!
Cheap comedy track by Ali and Brahmanandam is disgusting. Thisparate comedy track is in no way of any use to the film. Bad screenplay in the second half, lewd dialogues, and nauseating action stunts are major drawbacks. Also Puri’s potshots at media unwarranted. Prakash Raju's performance is very repetitive. Some of the scenes put off women and family audiences because of excessive sex-related scenes and dialogues.
Bottom line!
The film may go down well with Mahesh’s fans. But for others it is very average film. On the whole, not that bad and not that well. Just an okay flick. Puri once again rips off an Hollywood flick, that’s it. Its success depends on this week's other big releases

Posted by: Mr. SiriVennela At: 28, Apr 2006 6:36:46 PM IST Jeevi review for Pokiri-3.5/5
Analysis: First half of the film is very entertaining. The tempo has gone down a bit in the second half, but the run up to the climax is good. The plus points of this film are Mahesh Babu’s extraordinary performance and Puri Jagan’s characterization of hero. On the flip side, second half should have handled better. The emotions aspect is not properly taken care of. On the commercial front, Pokiri film has more appeal towards A centers and youth base compared to family crowds and B/C centers. On a whole, Mahesh Babu’s performance in Pokiri itself is worth your ticket and the rest is bonus!
