Embodied soul forgets its existence due to limitations of body and body limitations can be rid off by return journey towards the source which happens only if reminded about its goal by other realised soul. So this conflict goes on till that realisation.

As a matter of fact soul wants pure existence but body and senses do not permit that purity due to obvious reason to be among numbers(company). This is the reason why one develops ego to an extent beyond control.The ego develops to higher degrees due to material advancement where as the spiritual development allows the soul to get back to its original purest condition and this conflict only is the cause of all problems. If somehow we can strike a balance between soul and mind by practise we can be sure of our destination. so whether in body or not soul always likes to travel alone to reach its destination.
