| Sure, we would receive 'em !!!
Posted by: Malakpet Rowdy At: 10, Jan 2005 9:04:03 PM IST No I am not,
I feel that the people who are refusing the clothes are NOT THE ACTUAL VICTIMS. So I thought it would be a good idea to do some assessment before distribution. I was just putting forth an idea .. pardon me if I sounded stupid. If you ask me "How to assess them?" then I may not be able to give you a totally correct answer though I have a few ideas .. I'll have to talk to a few friends of mine who did a good job during the Konaseema Cyclone in the late 90s. But you people can throw up a few ideas too. I'm sure you also want your contribution to go to the "most deserved" .. right?
Posted by: Malakpet Rowdy At: 10, Jan 2005 8:29:08 PM IST Admin and Ananth,
I just get info from the members of our group that the victims are not willing to accept clothes but are accepting other essentials like Toothpaste, Soap etc. Is this a fact or Have the organizations failed to reach the actual victims?
Can somebody, who worked on the relief sites, throw more light on this while I work this out thru the Jet-Lag?
Yuga, whats your take? Lost your number as my mobile is at Vizag, could u call me at my office #?

One of the saddest things I have seen in my journey through Tamil Nadu is that in village after village, the villagers fight with each other to get hold of relief material. Say a truck comes with food handouts. Immediately crowds gather around it and fight to get the supplies being given.
Many of the relief organisations that drive down don't bother to actually spend time in a village and assess its needs -- they simply thrust things into the hands that reach out into their truck, and then they drive off.
The consequence of this is that the strongest people end up getting all the goodies, and this happens time and again, as truck after relief truck passes by. The regular winners of booty may even start hoarding the supplies they get their hands on. This, naturally, leads to fights, as those who don't get any relief, or who get too little of it, start fighting with the ones who do.
The irony in all this is that often the people who are most affected don't even go to the relief trucks to get help, they just sit in what is left of their huts, often in a state of shock. They think of what has passed, and not the truck that passes, while outside, people fight.

Posted by: Mr. RP At: 7, Jan 2005 11:51:09 AM IST Very happy to see the efforts.
Everyone might have given their share, the amount they can spare, through any of the organizations.
We spent money a lot. We can curb an unnecessary expenditure and can donate that amount. Rs. 50 or Rs. 100 may not be a matter when you are confident that it is being spent for a good cause. When you collect from your friends, it will become considerable amount, which can make a difference.
Though last year ended with devastation, it created hope to humanity as people from all corners of the world responded with generosity. Showed empathy towards the victims.
As we are all associated with telugupeople.com in one way or other, it is good if we can collect and donate as 'telugupeople' family. There is much interaction and association among us. Why not come together for a good cause?
Ofcourse any work must be done wholeheartedly. So I wish those who are interested to come forward and work in whatever way they like.

http://www.telugupeople.com/tsunami/
--------
We are trying to contact Bharadwaj (MR) to discuss on clothes and other supplies collected in USA. Please let him/their group know that we are waiting for them and ask them to contact Mr.Prasad at: prasad@telugupeople.com or 732-221-3642 at New Jersey, USA.

Yugandhar garu, RP garu,
Yes, this kind of discussion is necessary. Just collecting funds is not enough. Spending time for this cause and thinking about it is also a great donation.

Thanks a lot to everybody for your faith on TP.com - we work hard to keep it up.
