Participatory Poverty Assessment. This is a very good programme. Through this programme, the villagers themselves assess their poverty level but not people who go there for the study. Based on their requirements, we will help them in those activities and drive them towards self sustenance. ... Good!! But before going ahead, it's necessary to assess that peoples' assessment is correct or not.

You both understood the strategy well! Good. There are two approaches to go ahead. Emic and Etic. Emic: Studying them as an insider. That means, we should be part of their village. We need to find out their real problems from their mind. Etic: We need to approach them as a outsider with tools for their development. That means we contact them occassionally. But I suggest, the approach must be both Etic+Emic = It's an anthropological advise for any development activity before one start.

Yes. Preliminary data must be acquired before starting the work. After collecting the Data, we should do a pilot study of the selected villages. In my opinions, we need to win the villagers by conducting medical camps...first. Like eye testing...it works.

Vevaji, thank you for your opinions. I still confine to my idea, let us first start with a small village. We are not into action and not interested for it until next year. We need to conduct a study according to our plan. At that time, we can consider all these options. When we go, we might get more questions and more issues to consider. I think we can start with collecting the statistical data from the villages. 1) How many villages do we have in Andhra? 2) How can we organize them into groups based on the size and remoteness to the cities? 3) Statistical Data. a) Overall Population b) Average members in a family c) Total no. of men, Total no. of women d) Total no. of children in various age groups e) Speciality of the village (every village is famous for something or other) f) What is the main occupation of that village? g) What are the sources of income for them? h) What are the skills they are trained into for generations? i) What are the govt. plans that are under implementation there? j) Are they part of any self-help groups? k) Are there any NGOs working/operating in that village? l) Is there any school? m) Is there any health center? n) What about the religious activities there? o) What are their needs? Mr. Chandrareddy of MAD group is already working in his village with the help of his friends. He is also trying to send the youth to Anna Hazare. I am personally averse to the cine actors or politicians involvement. But if majority of us agree, I do not deny. I hope Bharadwaj ji will convene SHiFT meeting and discuss all these issues. We need to conduct a vast study.
