Music lovers of yester years will certainly remember the romantic song in Atmabalam produced by Dr. V B Rajendra Prasad under Jagapathi Banner. The song “Chita pata chinukulu padutoo vunte…. Chelikaade sarasana vunte….. Chgettapattaga chetulu pattee …. Chettu needakai parugeduthuntee….. Cheppaleni aaa haayi… yentho vechaga vuntundooyee….” was a sensational hit. Rumours spread all over Andhra Pradesh state when the movie was newly released saying that this rain song would be censored soon. The song was shot on Akkineni Nageswara Rao and B Saroja Devi, the lead roles in the movie. You will be surprised if you know the amount of time the movie makers used to take for music sittings those days. You want to know how this song was born!
The producer Dr. V B Rajendra Prasad took the team of Acharya Athreya (lyricist), K V Mahadevan (Music Director), Puhalendi (Asst. Music Director) to Bangalore for writing lyrics in a serene climate and to tune the lyrics. The team stayed in a Hotel close to Cubban Park for over 10 days. Rajendra Prasad was utterly disappointed, the way, the things were moving. Atreya did not open his pen at all. Mahadevan could not compose even one song as the lyric was not ready. Unable to sustain the tension, Rajendra Prasad suggested Atreya and others to return back to Madras (Chennai). The team was scheduled to leave Bangalore for Madras, the next day. Atreya spent sleepless night that day. Feeling discreditable, Atreya woke up from his bed at 4 am, while all others were asleep and went into Cubban Park nearby for an ambience. People used to visit the Park for a morning walk. As it was a chilling weather in mid October, he saw a young couple running to the shade of a tree in a drizzling weather with the young man taking the saree end of the young lady into his hands to cover both from the drizzling rain as an umbrella. Atreya’s thoughts flew spontaneously. He returned to Hotel. The beautiful lyric was given shape. In continuation he wrote two more songs the same moment.
Rajendra Prasad knocked Atrey’s door that morning. He said every one is ready to pack up and waiting for Atreya to come out of the room. Atreya in his usual style replied” I am also ready…….but not to vacate the Hotel….but to sit for tuning the lyric”. Rajendra Prasad thrilled by the surprise action of Atreya arranged for musical sitting immediately. Mahadevan, the maestro brought the tune to this lyric “Chitapata Chinukulu”. The rest of course….I need not explain. The lyric which starts with the sound “cchh” has many synonymous rhythmic words like “ chitapata; chinukulu; chelikade; chettapattaga; chethulupatti; chettuneedakai; cheppaleni etc.,” The greatness of the lyric was the usage of the words differently like “ chalichaligaa gili vestunte… gili ginthalu pedutoo vunte “. Atreya did enjoy and described “ Kaaru mabbulu kammuthu vunte…. Kammuthu vunte… Kallaku evaroo kanabada kunte.. kanabada kunte… Jagathini vunnadi manamiddarame anukoni hattuku pothunte”.
This is how the song was born.
