The decoration is in the form of a peepal leaf, about 5.8cm long, 4.7cm wide and 3.1mm thick. It is of toned bronze. On its obverse is embossed a replica of the sun, 1.6cm in diameter, below which Bharat Ratna is embossed in Hindi. On the reverse side the state emblem and motto is inscribed in burnished bronze.
So far, 40 persons have been conferred this award; 11 of them posthumously. The first three recipients of Bharat Ratna were Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, C.Rajgopalachari and Dr. C.V Raman in 1954. Khan Abdul Gafar Khan was the first foreigner to be honoured with the award in 1987, the other being Dr. Nelson Mandela (1990). Among the awardees, there were also 3 noble laureates, viz., Dr. C.V Raman (1954), Mother Teresa (1980), Dr. Amartya Sen (1999). The Bharat Ratna for the year 2001 was conferred on Lata Mangeshkar and Ustad Bismillah Khan.
