hmmmm......
ok ,the final answer is :
as MR said,in first 5 races, 15 horses will be selected
A1,A2,A3,
B1,B2,B3
C1,C2,C3
D1,D2,D3
E1,E2,E3
and 6th race is for all the winners in the 5 races (i.e.) A1,B1,C1,D1,E1
lets say A1,B1,C1 are the winners in the 6th race with positions 1,2 and 3.
then D1,E1 and hence D2,D3,E2,E3 are eliminated
and A1 is declared as final winer and is left aside
now,B3 and C2,C3 are also eliminated cause there r already atleast 3 horses better than them
and hence the final 7th race is for
A2,A3,B1,B2,C1
and in that 2 best horses are choosen and given 2nd and 3rd as final positions.....

I thought it was 8 ...
First 5 Races would give 15 winners
6 th race among the toppers of each catergory would give:
#1 Horse = 1
Horses in the same group as #1 = 2
Horses in the group, the topper of which stood second in the 6 th race = 3
The Horse which stood third in Race 6 = 1
( All other horses could be discarded since none of them stands below #4 overall)
So, at the end of the Sixth Race We are left with 6 Horses (2+3+1), since #1 Horse is already selected
So I thought we needed 2 more races and in toto it would be 6+2 = 8
.. but I guess I was wrong somewhere

ok....After the 5 races, u will get 15 horses three from each race...now, u have to get best three from those 15 horses in two more races....
Clue :
suppose,in one of the 5 races, horses A,B,C are the winners, with positions
A -1
B - 2
C - 3
then again if A is lost in any other race,then u need not check for the horses B and C as they r already ranked less than A...
hope u got it and u can solve it now...
i never expected this one this much tough....
