Posted by: Ravi At: 13, May 2003 9:03:05 PM IST Hey Sanjeev, what about my $400 solution for the first problem, is it wrong anywhere?
Posted by: Hytech At: 13, May 2003 7:16:43 PM IST 1)An explorer named Marco wants to cross an Australian desert on foot. The track will begin in the outback at the aboriginal village of Kwazi and takes six days. However, one man can only take enough food to last him four days.
Fortunately, Marco can hire porters from Kwazi to assist him. Each porter cost $100 per day that he is away from the village. What is the least possible cost to Marco of hiring enough porters so that he can cross the desert and the porters can return home safely?
Ans)Desert Survival
The cost to Marco is $600.
Marco (M) hires Porter A, and Porter B. All take 4 days of food.
Start :
Marco(4), A(4), B(4) where number in brackets denotes days of food remaining.
After Day 1 :
Marco(3), A(3), B(3). A gives one days food to M and one day to B :
We now have M(4) A(1), B(4)
After Day 2 :
(A returns home, cost $200 for being away 2 days)
We now have M(3), B(3)
B gives 1 day to M : M(4) B(2)
M then has enough to get to day 6, B returns home at cost of $400 for being away 4 days)
Total cost = $200 for A, and $400 for B = $60
2)You have two glasses filled with the exact same amount of liquid. One contains wine, the other water. First, take one teaspoon of water from the water glass and pour it into the wine glass. After stirring the wine glass, take a teaspoon of liquid and pour into the water glass. Is there now more wine in the water glass than water in the wine glass, or is there less ?
Ans)Neither. There is an equal amount of water in the wine glass as there is wine in the water glass.
Assume each glass contains 90 units of liquid and that a spoon holds 10 units.
After transferring the water from the water glass to the wine glass, the wine glass contains 90 units of wine and 10 units of water whilst the water glass contains 80 units of water.
When transferring from the mixed glass back to the water glass, we will be taking out 1/10th of the total liquid since a teaspoon is 10 units and the glass contains 100 units. So we are removing 90*(1/10) wine and 10*(1/10) water. This equates to 9 units wine, and 1 unit water. The remaining liquid in the glass is now 81 (90-9) wine, and 9 (10-1) water.
Now, we add the 9 units of wine and the 1 unit of water to the water glass. This makes 81 (80+1) water, and 9 units of wine.
The glasses now have an equal proportion of liquid in each glass
3)You have two pieces of wire and a lighter. Each piece of wire takes 40 minutes to burn from one end to the other, but burns unevenly. For example, it may only take 7 minutes to burn half the wire, and 33 minutes for the remaining half. How do you time 30 minutes ?
Ans)Light both ends of the first wire, and one end of the second wire. After 20 minutes, the whole of the first wire will have burnt, and half of the second wire. At this point, light the other end of the second wire. This will then take a further 10 minutes to burn making 30 minutes.
keep watching for more....
Yours ..,
Sanjeev
Posted by: Mr. Sanjeev Dev At: 13, May 2003 4:54:49 PM IST ok. Heres the answer for the 3rd question. Here it goes...
First wire - light both ends. Second wire - light
one end. In 20 minutes, first one is done, second one is half done. Then
light other end of the second one. This should take another 10 minutes. Total
is 30 minutes.
Posted by: Mr. Spider Man At: 12, May 2003 11:18:03 PM IST Yes, I realized that after posting!
I am getting a $400 solution but is getting very complicated!!
a) Just take 1 porter (8)
b) Travel 1 day together (8-2=6) to spot A
c) Marco returns back to Kwazi and Porter leaves 1 days food there (spot A) and proceeds ahead with 4 days of food for another day, that leaves 3 with him at the end of 2nd day while Marco is at the base.
d) On the third day, Marco starts back with a full load of 4 days again and Porter returns back with one day's food leaving 2 at the spot B (end of 2 days journey)
e) When they meet after 1 day at spot A, Porter will pick up his 1 day food that he left in spot A from step c) and Marco will proceed to spot B. Now Marco will have 4 days food for the rest of his 4 day journey!
f) Effectively porter is traveling for 4 days, 2 days forward and 2 back!
Posted by: Hytech At: 12, May 2003 11:12:52 PM IST Hey Partha, Marco is not supposed to (i mean, cannot) carry 5 days food with him.. Look at Sanjeev's puzzle carefully..
Posted by: Mr. Spider Man At: 12, May 2003 10:09:49 PM IST 1) $200, He will only need one porter for 2 days, so Marco and the porter will carry 8 days of food combined, after one day the porter will keep one day's of food for himself and return back giving the rest of his 2 day's food to Marco and then Marco will use his remaining 3 and 2 from the porter to finish his 5 day stretch.
3)Got the hint from spider - light the first wire from both ends which should take 20 mins, after that is done fold the second wire in half and burn from both ends and this should take 10 mins.
Regarding Kerry and Terry, the mother need not travel in a boat crossing the IDL, she could give birth to one on Feb 28th, 11:59 pm and the other one on Mar 1st, 12:01 am on a regular year and when the leap year comes they would be 2 days apart!
Posted by: Hytech At: 12, May 2003 9:55:53 PM IST Not sure about the 3rd one.. but, this is my answer.
3) Burn the first wire from both ends. It should get burnt in 20 mins. As soon as the first wire is burnt, break the 2nd wire into 2 halves and burn one half on both ends... this should take 10 mins (not sure..).
Posted by: Mr. Spider Man At: 12, May 2003 8:14:48 PM IST Solution:
1) $600 is the least possible cost to Marco. He hires 2 porters (12 days of food). After the first day, they will be left with 9 days of food. He must send one porter back giving him 1 days food. Now, Marco and 1 porter are left with 8 days of food. After the second day, they are left with 6 days of food. Now, marco has to send the 2nd porter back with 2 days of food and he can carry on or the next 4 days with 4 days of food. The first porter was away for total of 2 days and the second for 4 days. Thats a total cost of $600.
2) The water in wine glass than wine in the water glass.
