using of coconut only in hindu temples also has a symbolism. the coconut has a fibrous husk on the outside. the next layer is a hard shell inside which is the thirst quenching water and sweet juicy flesh. the smooth skin inside represents our body; in this body is the mind.
the fibrous husk represents all the negative emotions in us like pride and arrogance. these emotions lead to an egoistical frame of mind, which deludes us into thinking, that we are the sole cause for our success. our ignorance and arrogance are a barrier to realisation that it's God's grace that guides our endeavours. this is symbolized by the the hard shell of the coconut prevents us from reaching the sweet water in it.
hence, the breaking of the hard shell of the coconut signifies breaking this ego. thats why we use coconut.

Mr. Wagle goes to work by a bus. One day he falls asleep when the bus still has twice as far to go as it has already gone.
Halfway through the trip he wakes up as the bus bounces over some bad potholes. When he finally falls asleep again, the bus still has half the distance to go that it has already travelled. Fortunately, Mr. Wagle wakes up at the end of his trip.
What portion of the total trip did Mr. Wagle sleep?
