“Excuse me. Can you tell me how do I get to Sector 21 from here?” Anoushka and Neha stopped to look at the guy sitting in Hyundai Accent which had just drawn up alongside them. He was surely an outsider if he didn’t know how to find his way in the well-planned city of Chandigarh. “Go straight from here and take the third left. Going down 2 blocks you will find the Reliance Circle. From there, take a right and you will be in Sector 21”, Anoushka replied. “Well, frankly I have been going round and round for the past half an hour. Still can’t find it. Maybe if you are going in that direction and if I can offer you a lift, could you show me how to get there.” Anoushka hesitated. Although the guy looked to be decent enough, she did not want to trust a stranger. But before she could say anything, Neha had already climbed into the back of the car. “Oh yes. We were going in that direction itself. You can drop me at Sector 19. Anoushka here stays in 20. And you have to go to 21. Hi ! I am Neha”, the confident Neha had by this time not only told the stranger their names but also practically their addresses. “Hi Neha. Hi Anoushka”, said the stranger to them. Looking at Anoushka who by now had slid the front seat of the car he added, “I am Karan” “Hi Karan. So you seem to be new in Chandigarh. Where are you from?”, Neha had easily moved into her role of an extrovert chatterbox. “I am from Mumbai actually. And currently hopelessly lost in this planned city.” “That’s ok. It happens. You need to be here for just 2 days and you would know all of it like the back of your hand” “I hope so. I am here for a week and if in the meantime I have to ask everybody for how to get from one sector to another, its going to be very embarrassing. Not that I mind it if I have two beautiful guides to help me” Anoushka, who had been a silent spectator until now was shocked by the brazen manner in which Karan had just flirted with the two of them. “Take the next left” she said, limiting her conversation only to guiding this guy to his destination. “You can drop me here.” Neha said. “I too will get down here. You can see the circle ahead. Just take a right from there” Anoushka also volunteered to get out of the car. “Hey but I can drop you in Sector 20. Isn’t that the one just ahead?” “No thanks. I will go from here” “Oh its not any trouble. I can do this much for someone who has been good enough to show me the way around” “Yes, go on Anu. Its not like he’s gonna abduct you. Or are you, Karan?” “Neha …” Anoushka blushed. “Not that I had planned to, Neha. But I might just be tempted” “I wouldn’t blame you. Anoushka’s beauty had made a Romeo out of many a Chandigarh-ites” “Will you just shut up, Neha?” Anoushka was getting redder by the minute. “Ok, just drop me off at the next signal. Bye Neha” “Bye Anu. And don’t forget … tomorrow 4 at the Town Centre. Bye Karan. It was nice meeting you” Neha waved out as the car eased back into the traffic. “Sorry if I embarrassed you. But I couldn’t help it. Your friend has an infectious enthusiasm.” Karan was trying to make her comfortable. “That’s ok. Neha is just like that. Doesn’t think about what she says” “Ok, so you didn’t mind after all.” “I didn’t say that.” “What would you say if I told you that the thought of abduction did cross my mind?” “I would say that you are being extremely forward. My sector has come. Please stop the car” “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you.” Karan tried to make up as he stopped the car. “That’s ok. That ahead is Sector 21. Good bye” Anoushka got out and walked away. Not that she was really angry. But she did not want to come across as someone who mixes easily with strangers. ---------- “So did he say anything afterwards?” Neha tried to inveigle the happenings of yesterday from her best friend “Nothing. Apart from being just a bit over-smart.” “But I thought he was cute too” “Yeah? Well why don’t I tell Manish when he comes that you were out flirting with this cute guy yesterday” “Manish wouldn’t mind. He knows I flirt with anyone and everyone. That’s my nature” “Well yeah. And I don’t. That’s my nature” “Ok Anu. Now don’t be cross. And thanks for helping me out as usual. You know how difficult it is to meet Manish. And if I don’t have you as my alibi, then stepping out of the house in the afternoon becomes so difficult” “And this is how you repay me? By telling every stranger who stops by that I am Chandigarh’s Juliet” “He seemed enamored by you.” “The hell he was. And now lets stop talking about him. As if we don’t have any other interesting things to talk about?” “Not as interesting as a perfect stranger offering you a lift and then hinting to abduct you” “Neha, if you don’t stop then I am going to be really cross with you. Because of you, I almost got very rude with him yesterday. He must be thinking that all girls from Chandigarh are this way.” “Well, why don’t you clear his misunderstanding then?” Neha gestured in the direction behind her. Anoushka turned around to see the same handsome face beaming at her from a distance of 20 yards. “Hi. Fancy meeting you here. Chandigarh really is a small place” Karan’s opening gambit did nothing to dispel the doubt from Anoushka’s mind that he had overheard about their meeting place and time yesterday. “Hi Karan. Nice to see you again. Anoushka tells me what a good boy you were yesterday and dropped her off at her place.” “If she said that, I am obliged. Otherwise I thought I had really blown it yesterday” “Well, you almost did. Did you manage to find the place you were looking for?” Anoushka piped in not wanting the conversation to get back on the same track. “Thanks to you, I did. I had some free time this afternoon and thought I would go around sight-seeing” “There’s a lot to see in Chandigarh. I am sure Anu will be glad to show you around” Neha smiled mischievously. “I would not. Anyway, I have to go to the library” Anoushka replied, shocked that Neha would try to patch her up with this guy. “Like you always do. Manish and I are going to be gone a few hours. And I don’t expect you to hang around the library. Why don’t you show Karan around?” “Yes, that would be a great idea. That is, if you don’t mind” Anoushka didn’t know what to say. Initially she was shocked at the brazenness of Karan. But she was also interested in this charming stranger. And with Neha, her best friend, seemingly teamed up with him against her, she was left in an awkward situation. “Well ok. But only for 2 hours. After that I have to get back” “Two hours it is, madame” Karan smiled his confident smile again. And despite her self, Anoushka couldn’t help smiling back. “So where do we start? The Sukhna Lake” Karan asked “Are you crazy? Do you know the number of people who will be at the lake at this hour? I don’t wanna be seen in a paddle boat with a stranger” “We have already met twice. Not that I am a stranger really. But then, I get your point. You choose” “Have you seen the Rock Garden yet?” “Heard about it. Not seen it. Won’t there be people you know at this time?” “The only people who visit the Rock Garden are tourists. So no harm in going there. After that I can show you the Free Hand Monument and maybe the Rose Garden” “Bye Neha. Thanks for this” Karan winked and they made their way to his car. ---------- “So Anoushka, what do you do apart from being rude to strangers who offer you a lift in their car?” “I am sorry for that. But you didn’t help either by making me uncomfortable yesterday.” “I am sorry for that too. So shall we start again? Hi, I am Karan. I am from Mumbai, where I assist my Dad in a garments business. In Chandigarh for the same purpose. Staying here for a week and currently going sight-seeing with a girl who still hasn’t told me anything about herself” Anoushka laughed. “I have done a course in Fashion Desgning and I run a small boutique from my place. Neha is my partner.” “Fashion Desgning? That’s great. That means our businesses are related” “Yes they are. But I am sure we are not here to talk business. Are we, Mr. Karan?” “Not at all, Ms. Anoushka. It is a Ms., I hope?” “Will you ever give up? By the way, yes, it is a Ms.” Anoushka found herself being drawn by the charm of this guy whom she couldn’t help liking. They bought tickets and made their way inside the Rock Garden. Anoushka showed him Nek Chand’s creations which were literally “Best out of waste”. It took them a good one hour to walk through the three wings of the Rock Garden and reach the newest portion which was still under construction. “Wow. That was beautiful. But I wonder why it is so ill-maintained” Karan was talking about the innumerable scribbling on the walls proclaiming the love of various couples. It sickened him to think of the way people defiled monuments and places of importance with their stupid writings. “I know. It pains me to see it this way. Just think of what the foreign tourists must be thinking. When we go abroad, it is such a pleasure to see how they maintain even their most mediocre tourist places.” “Yeah. And here people think it fashionable to leave their imprints all over the place. Sort of trying to make their love immortal.” “Love … now that itself is fashionable these days. Remember the oldies. In movies, they used to show the heroine singing a love song while swinging on swings suspended from branches in the tree. And on seeing the hero approach, the shyness enveloping them …” “Are you a hopeless romantic or what? You think in today’s times somebody would waste her time swinging on such swings. And where are swings to swing from nowadays?” Karan teased her. “Right in front of you. Unless you are blind of course. Can’t you see those long swings” Karan looked yonder where he saw about 10-12 swings suspended from 20 feet long metal chains. The whole setting was designed to remind tourists of a village atmosphere. It was here that kids and adults alike were shrieking out in joy while swinging to the push of someone from behind. “Do you wanna do that?” asked Karan looking at the wistful look in Anoushka’s eyes. “I would love to. But …” “Oh come on.” With this Karan took her hand and dragged her across to the first available swing. Pushing her on to it, he climbed up from behind and started thrusting the swing forward to pick up that swinging motion. The swing started going higher and higher. Anoushka and Karan were thoroughly enjoying themselves. Like kids, they screamed and shrieked. Anoushka couldn’t believe that she was enjoying this moment with a guy whom she has known for just a few hours. “Its two hours already. Time’s up, mister” “Oh. I didn’t realize how fast the time flew by. Shall we be back on our way?” “Yes please.” As they made their way back, Anoushka couldn’t help admitting that she had had a good time today. She wasn’t surprised when Karan mentioned the same thing. “Thanks Anoushka, I had a fun time today. And I am glad we hit off well after that especially bad start yesterday” “Yes Karan. I think I enjoyed today too.” “Well, any chances of coming out with me for a coffee tomorrow?” Karan took his chances. “Are you asking me out for a date, Mr. Karan?” “Just a harmless cup of coffee, Ms. Anoushka” “I am not so sure it would be harmless.” It was Anoushka’s time to tease him now. “For me, I am not sure. For you I can assure you it will be” Karan winked. “Oh God !!! You have the gall, mister” “Come on Anoushka. You said you had good time. Try me once more. I am not such a bad guy” “You proved you are not. Ok yes. Tomorrow evening 5:30?” “Great. Shall I pick you up? Now that I know where you stay” “No way. I shall meet you again at the town center” “As you wish, madame. Seeya tomorrow then” ---------- “So Ms. Juliet, is there a Romeo to serenade the romantic in you?” They were sitting at a Barista near the bus station. They had met every evening in the past 5 days. “I don’t know you enough to answer that.” “Sometimes you get to know a person in a few moments and sometimes you may take a whole lifetime and never get to know anyone” “Sounds good in the books. Not in real life. Don’t you need to trust a person before you open your personal life in front of him?” “Don’t you trust me? This is the sixth time you have come out with me. Would you do that without trusting someone? And that too someone, who you have met for just a couple of hours” “Nice try, mister. No, there is no Romeo. But that does not mean that I am available either” “Huh?” “My parents have found someone for me.” “Ohhhh … arranged marriage” “Yeah. Why that look?” “Well, you didn’t seem like the one who would settle for an arranged marriage” “What’s wrong with that?” “Nothing. Except that you are destined to spend your whole life with a person whom you have hardly met and known. And that you are not free to make your own decisions.” “Some one just now said that it takes a few moments to know someone” “Yes but sometimes. Not always” “So … the guy who my parents have chosen is someone who my Shashi aunty knows for quite some time. He lives in their neighbourhood in Mumbai.” “Yes. But you don’t know him. What you know about him is your aunt’s perspective.” “That’s not so bad, is it? And anyway, I am going to Mumbai next week to meet him.” “Tell me about him. What does he do?” “Name is Siddhant. He is an MBA and works as a consultant with McKinsey. Stays at Hiranandani, which I have heard is a very good location in Mumbai” “One of the best. But is that all you know and feel is sufficient to know about your life partner?” “Karan, what’s the use of talking about all this? I haven’t found any Romeo in my life yet. I may be a romantic at heart. But I am also very practical. My parents love me a lot. They would have taken decisions about my life after a lot of thinking. I don’t wish to hurt them.” “But it’s your life. How can you let someone else decide for you? And if you haven’t found a Romeo yet, it still does not mean that you will not find him in the next 5 days. Maybe you are not looking for him.” “So what do I do? Keep waiting for him. Karan, having all these Richard Bach-istic ideas in real life does not help.” “But marrying a total stranger helps. Have you at least seen his photograph?” “Well, Shashi aunty had sent it to me. But turned out that it was a photo of Siddhant when he was 2 years old and sitting in a bath tub.” “Oh. At least it proves that the guy has a sense of humour.” “Yes he does. And anyway, I am going to meet him next week.” “And what if you do not like him? What if Siddhant turns out to be a bore who can’t think of anything but his job? What if he does not fancy the idea of swinging on swings even if they are tied to cement trees in a Rock Garden filled with scribbling of love-struck couples?” At this point Anoushka could not help but laugh. “Well, there is always you to do that for me. And if Siddhant does turn out to be a bore, then I can refuse him, right?” “Won’t that hurt the sentiments of your parents and Shashi aunty?” “I am sure they will understand before getting me married off to a bore.” “If you say so.” “What’s eating you, Karan? Why have you brought up all this? We are getting to be good friends and there’s no use fighting about things that we think about differently.” “What’s eating me is that I can’t see a smart, intelligent and beautiful girl like you getting pulled into an arranged marriage in order to spend all your life with a bore McKinsey employed MBA.” “You don’t even know that he is going to be a bore.” “Well, I wish he would be.” “How mean, Karan. You wish for me to be married to a bore?” “Definitely not. I would like to see you married to a person who is like you. Smart, intelligent, handsome. One who would push you on swings tied from cement trees …” “Like you, Karan” Anoushka cut him short. Karan looked at her. This was what he had wanted to tell her. He had fallen in love with her. Right from the first day he had stopped by to ask her directions. Although he had not meant for his proposal to come out in this manner, Anoushka had forced him to. He was going back to Mumbai and he couldn’t bear to go away without telling her what he felt. “That’s enough, Karan. You come into my life all of sudden and in 6 days you expect that I fall in love with you. And tell my parents that I can’t go off to Mumbai as I have found a guy for myself. A guy who is smart, intelligent and handsome. He pushes me on swings, takes me out to coffee and makes me smile. But apart from that, I do not know anything about him.” “That’s not what I meant, Anoushka” “No Karan. It’s just not meant to be. I can’t decide my whole life based on 5 evenings.” “But you can do it based on one evening in which you meet a stranger and decide whether he is worthy enough to be your life-partner?” Anoushka got up. “Where are you going?” “Home” “Just like that. Without saying anything” “Both of us have said enough. And I think it is better to end it like this than to delve deeper into a relationship which is going to end up in nothing but hurt. Bye Karan. I really had a nice time these few days. But I am afraid I am not strong enough to be your Juliet. Please let me be.” And with that, Anoushka climbed into a rickshaw and instructed the rickshaw puller to take her home. Karan sat still at the table, seeing her straight-backed figure in the rickshaw. He kept looking at her till she faded out of sight. Tomorrow, he would return back to Mumbai. Would he ever see her again? ---------- Anoushka cried all night. She knew that she had also grown to love Karan. She hated God for putting her in this conundrum. Her life was going perfectly well. A profitable boutique, dreams of a nice husband. And then Karan had to come into her life. And cast it into turmoil. She knew she could not tell her parents about him. They would never accept her decision. She thought best to forget about her love story which had lasted for 6 days. Three days went by and Anoushka came to Mumbai along with her parents. That evening they were to go next door to meet Siddhant and his family. Anoushka was still pretty sad about last week’s events and nothing in Mumbai helped her cheer up. She dressed up as well as she could and accompanied her parents and aunt to Siddhant’s house. As she sat in the drawing room, taking in the plush interiors, her sight riveted onto a photo on the mantelpiece. There, staring out at her was the same handsome face that had been in front of her all the past evenings. The photo was of 2 guys. What was this, she thought. Had Siddhant sent his friend to meet her and appraise her? She was confused now and also very shocked that the events of last week were pre-planned and not incidental as she had thought them to be. “Here comes Siddhant”, said Shashi Aunty Anoushka looked up to see the 2 guys in the photograph stride up in front of them. She looked at Karan who gave her the same confident smile as usual. And he had a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. Oh, how she hated him. “Hello Uncle Ji, Aunty Ji. This is my friend, Karan” Anoushka couldn’t believe her ears. The one whom she had taken to be Siddhant was being introduced as Karan. And Siddhant was the person whom she had hated just a moment before. “Hi Anoushka. Its nice to meet you finally” Siddhant, or who she knew as Karan, said to her. And then the same wink. Only this time, he shared it with Shashi Aunty. Anoushka was speechless. She couldn’t believe what was happening. She waited until the moment that the elders had left them alone to talk. “If looks could kill, then I would be dead by now” said the by-now familiar voice to Anoushka. “Karan … I mean, Siddhant. What is the meaning of all this?” Anoushka turned on to him with all her fury. “Nothing Anu. Let me tell you everything. I hope you will at least listen to all that I have to say” Anoushka could only stare with an angry look. “I take your silence as a yes. You know my thoughts about arranged marriages. When my parents brought your proposal to me, I was not interested. But when I saw your photograph, I fell in love. Call it Richard Bach-istic if you want. But that’s the way it is. I was torn between my growing feelings towards you and between my ideas of marriage. I wanted to meet you and get to know you better. All the same, I wanted you to know me and love me before agreeing to spend your whole life-time with me. And when I realized that you are coming here, I knew that I had just 10 days to make you fall in love with me. And that’s when, with Shashi Aunty and Neha’s help, posing as Karan, I came to Chandigarh …. “ Anoushka sat listening to Siddhant’s story. She knew that her anger was melting away. It all seemed like a dream. She was sitting in front of the person who she loved. And who was her parent’s choice too. “If you understand me, then know that I did all this just for you. And now that I know it, I can say that … I love you Anoushka” Siddhant uttered the magic words that broke Anoushka’s reverie. She knew that the only way she could respond was by saying what she had been wanting to say to him all this while. “I love you too, Karan” “Did I hear my name mentioned somewhere, Bhabhi?” called out Karan from outside the door, where he had been all this time, eavesdropping. Anoushka and Siddhant laughed at each other. “Its time you started calling me Siddhant to avoid any confusions” Siddhant said and winked.
