INDRANIL BASU
NEW DELHI: The don was in Karachi on Thursday, the day of the marriage
reception of his daughter Mahrukh and cricketer Javed Miandad's son,
Junaid.
Although in the city, Dawood Ibrahim did not go to Pearl Continental,
the hotel where the reception was held, possibly because intelligence
agencies were keeping a very close tab on the guests.
The wedding has aroused a lot of curiosity in Pakistan.
According to the Pakistan media, as many as 1,200 attended the
reception, although one of the guests — the uncle of a former Pakistan
cricket captain and a class mate of President Pervez Musharraf at the
Lahore Government College — told TOI that the number was much lower,
around 250-300.
TOI tried to reach Javed Miandad. The first time, his phone was
answered by someone with clipped British accent who said: "He has gone
out." Asked who he was, this person identified himself as Miandad's
son. As Miandad has only one son, we assumed it was the groom, Junaid,
and congratulated him.
"Thank you," said the voice. And how did his wedding go? He was
feeling happy, wasn't he? "Marragies are made in heaven," came the
response, and the phone was passed on to someone else, this time a
lady. After another round of adaabs, we asked who it was. "I am Javed
Miandad's wife," the person said.
We congratulated her too and said it was a pleasure talking to her son.
At this, the lady said sharply: "That wasn't my son." And disconnected
the phone.
Thereafter, we tried anything between 25 to 30 times but with no luck
— the phone just went on ringing. Having hit this wall, we tried to
reach one of the guests — Musharraf 's classmate.
The gentleman spoke at length and conveyed that the upper crust of the
Pakistani society had not quite approved the Dawood-Miandad matrimonial match
