Power lines in city to go underground Hyderabad, Aug. 24: In the next three years, the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad are going to be "wireless". AP Central Power Distribution Company Limited has launched a massive programme to replace all overhead distribution network in the city with underground cable system at a whopping cost of Rs 900 crore. According to Central Discom chairman and managing director Dinesh Kumar, about 2,000 km of overhead 11 kv lines and 3,000 km length of overhead LT line are proposed to be converted into underground cable system. He said the underground cable system would remove all the present inherent defects of overhead lines such as frequent power breakdowns due to fall of tree branches, flash over of disc and pin insulators and snapping of conductors, particularly during rainy season because of heavy gale and rains. "We are planning to complete the task in the next three years," Dinesh Kumar said. The Central Discom is also contemplating introduction of High Voltage Distribution System with low capacity distribution transformers of 25 KVA or 10 KVA capacity by which a maximum of four to five agricultural consumers in rural areas would be fed from each transformer with practically no LT line.
