Posted by: Pallavi At: 30, Jul 2004 12:18:31 PM IST hi raj sekhadr,
how are u?
least weighings is 4 weighings.
solution:
take 80 balls -- divide into 3 groups
27, 27, 26 - weigh 27 and 27 if not same case (1)
if yes - take 26 and again divide it into
9,9,8 -- weight 9 and 9 if not same case (2)
if yes -- divide 8 into 3,3,2
weigh 3 and 3 if not same case (3)
if yes -- 2 weigh and find the heavy one
in this case 4 weighings
case 1
if 27 and 27 are not same -- then divide into
9,9,9 and weight 2 if weight is same take the 3rd part, else take the heavy one.
again, divide into 3,3,3 and follow the same
again divide into 1,1,1 and fine the heavy one
in this case also 4 weighings
similarly in case 2 and 3 also 4 weighings

ok then,one from me..
There are 80 balls all of which are identical in weight except one which weighs slightly heavier.
You are given a common balance. In how many least weighings you can find out the defective ball?
