I guess i came to the right place. But i have a lot of time (i guess) to really worry about it. I would like to know about biology if you guys want to teach about it. and if you can help me with my project. I am a high school student in newjersey and i am assigned a project ( i have to decide what to do). It is supposed to be done by march and i don't have an idea what to do but i want to do something different. can you guys help me with it? i know that i am out of this topic. but if you can help me mail me at aymwos @telugupeople.com. thankyou

Right now Bioinformatics is a fairly new field. It is just coming up. There are not many universities that offer this program. The only university that offers this program is John Hopkins University(www.jhu.edu) in Maryland, USA. Also, I think some universities in California offer them. I don't know, you might want to check them out on the internet. If you are interested, check the website that I gave. Actually, that is the university where I am doing my masters, but this is a part-time program that I am doing.
As I said earlier, I don't know in other places, but in washington DC area and most of the east coast of USA, there are lot of biotech/pharmaceutical companies which are in pretty good demand right now. I don't know if this field would be as popular as the computer field was, but I am pretty sure that it is going to be competitive field. Since the boom has just started with the decoding of the human genome, we are in the early stages of development in this career. As I can tell from my work experience, having a degree in bioinformatics will be of great advantage because you can combine the computer knowledge with the science background and make the most out of it.
Look at this way, there lot of things that we don't know about human sciences. So, no matter what there will always be diseases that needs to be addressed and for that you would need to know the sciences. So, in the long run this field would be a safe bet as career wise. But again, it depends on what you like to do, where would you like to see yourself settled in. To see if you really like this field, take the hard core science courses along with labs and see if you enjoy working in the labs because that is what you would be doing for the most part and of course eventually you can go into management if you wish to.
What background do you have in sciences so far? Because depending upon that you can probably get a job or work as an intern in labs to get more closer look. After you complete bachelors or if there is an exchange program with any of the universities here, then go for it. That would be a great opportunity for you.
Again, I just want to mention, this is a field where you need to have a liking for the subject, an interest in research. So, make sure you get a pretty good glimpse of it while you are in college and see if you still want to pursue it for the rest of your life.
Let me know if you need any more information.
Wish you all the best for your future endevours.
Posted by: Miss Madhavi Madhavi At: 18, Oct 2002 9:42:00 PM IST its very good and vast subject. now i am aslo in this field and doing research in microbiology related to pollution.and i am finding a little bit tuff with this.all are take easily about biology. i think with out biology survival of human beings may be in trobule. so i like biology and i die for biology

Hi! I am currently doing my masters in biotechnology. It is fairly a new program but has high prospects. I don't know about other parts of the world, but in USA, definitely it has a very good future. Especially, with all these biotech companies coming up, there is a great scope for this career. I would definitely encourage you to pursue the career. Is this like a bachelors program that you are in? Because you would need to have at least a bachelors to start your career in this field.
