A very nice topic indeed to have a debate and good thinking by Bond and Santosh. I would like add a few points.. First lets focus our discussion, I presume it is on 'Are we inferior to americans when it comes to research', this is important because Bond talked about Murthy's son who went for pursuing B. S. and which I guess is irrelevant here and one correction, he is in Cornell and not in Princeton. Now, when it comes to research, definitely India has everything except the most important thing, Money. Being an IITian, I know the inside story of research at IIT. If you ask me would you stay back to do research at IIT or do you want to go abroad, my answer would be 'Yes, I prefer to go abroad for studies but then I want to come back to pursue research, let's say becoming a Prof'. This is because you don't have enough money to do experiments, the motivation you get at a US university also is a factor. Now, the question, 'how many indians who have studies in US have won the nobel prizes?? '. See its hardly 40yrs since we started going abroad for studies, wait and see...All my Professors at IIT whom I emulate, whom I consider to be the leaders of Technology in India are all graduates from US universities, believe me..it's a matter of time. In general if we see why Indians are not getting Nobel prizes, its because material pursuit had never been our aim, our ancestors were all mature enough not to go after ephemeral material pleasures, they concentrated more on spirituality...Have you ever thought of 'How many Americans are Vivekanandas, Ramana Maharshis, Ravishankars', not a handful. Spirituality is in our blood, I don't think 'getting a Nobel Prize' is the best thing that can happen to you. I comply with Bond and Santosh that unfortunately a vast majority of the people going to US are doing so because they can't get seats in IITs/IISc and some of them are doing so because they want dowry, true indeed. But one thing, IITs/IISc can't provide seats to all and doing MS in any other University is not as good as doing the same in a US univ. So nothing wrong in going for studies, but the worst part is when people settle in US afterwards forever..I would say make money, but please come back to India, the country needs your services more than your money...

And how many indians who have studies in US have won the nobel prizes?? How many people go to US to do research aspiring for a nobel prize?? And nobel prize is a dream for anyone, be it an indian or any other national.. We will produce more kalpana chawlas in a few years...without a US degree...

i bet if facilities are sufficient enough, no country would dare to compete in any field and getting a nobel prize would not be any dream for an indian, but it would rather be a tradition.(i am slightly exaggerating it,to make it more intense)

students go to the foreign univs ,for many other reasons, for ex if i have interest in genetic engg. what research would i do in india. ie., facilities aren't enough ,not the talent. also,i am an aerospace engineer, if i am in india would i be another kalpana chawla

Do you people also know the reason why Infosys's Narayanamurthy's son joined princeton? because he could not qualify for IIT JEE.. Mr.Narayanamurthy himself told the press about this... And how many people working in US are doing quality work?? why anyone else.. ask me... I was doing much better work in India than i am currently doing..

Studying in US.. bottom line is a Dollar is 47.*** rupees.. Any other reason is bullshit.. If people think studying in US/UK gives them education in advanced technologies.. they are bullshiting again.. Did they ever try our premier institutes like IISc/IITs/IIMs ?? I bet 95% of them either did not try or did not qualify....

Well.......if you look at the stats.......85% stuudents VISA are in Engineering and technology areas......and obviously USA is far advanced in technology (both industrial and household)...hence it is obvious that the education there will be advanced than India........Being a non-technology sountry our best education institutions at the best can teach only on theoritical basis.....for the simple reason that we can't have a routine demo of technology which the general population does not use........ So the poor student who is thought theory but no demo slates this country as poor and having no options for himself...... but he forgots the mistake he has done.........he has studied the technology which this country at this point of time does not require......thnx to the screwed up vision of the leaders......who established these institutions...... hence you see the student community reach USA by default rather than choice and they know they are dead if they cant make it there........ so whether they are serious or not depends on your definition.......... 1. whether seriousness is about succeeding or 2. about higher education

its a good point! my soul as well not an enlighten one.. still,.. i think most of the students are really there to do what they want to! but some ppl come and join in a fameless college and work and go back to india with a convertion formula($ or £ to Rs). same amount of sweat gives more money abrod..and one more thing..earning money doesn't care the decent life style, b'cos indians care abt decency in india not in abrod..(of course not all ppl)

hi i am a recent entrant into the US of A, and I am not at all a part of the topic i just mentioned. I dont study here and i dont work. i fall in that other category where ppl can neither study nor work. Why i came here was not exactly my idea, so i am sorry abt not being able to offer an explanation to those who might ask me 'why i am here?' :) When i came here i saw a lot of indian students sweating it out in various shops and other places. It feels good to see that many of our students aspire to make it big in this country. But are they really serious or is it just because they see all the others doing the same and join the bandwagon?? Even today when they speak of bad market conditions and no jobs, there is a lot of enthusiasm in the Indian student community abt going 'to the states',studying there and making a living. Are these ppl so mad abt being a 'phoren' make?? R they serious and focussed abt what they want to do?? R they really happy doing odd jobs here instead of leading a decent lifestyle baack home?? Plz Enlighten me! I am a confused soul!!
