From: Nalgonda.Org PRESS RELEASE November 17,2002 New Jersey - USA Concerned NRIs from the non-political organization www.Nalgonda.Org organized a meet in New Jersey to discuss impending problems related to safe drinking water in their region of origin. Several concerned Non Resident Indians hailing from Nalgonda, Mahboobnagar, Ranga Reddy and Warangal met in New Jersey on November 17 to discuss and raise awareness regarding the availability of safe drinking water. Among issues discussed were excessive fluoride resulting in deadly Fluorosis and recurring draught in villages of Nalgonda, Mahaboobnagar, Ranga Reddy and Warangal districts. Many noted individuals have come together to shed light on these long standing issues including Mr. Arjun Dyapa Vice President of American Telugu Association, Mr. Damodar Donur, Chairman, NRI Committee. Chief guest at the meeting present was Mr.! Upendra Chivukula, Assemblyman, New Jersey who provided a first hand assessment of the problem from his recent visit to fluorosis affected villages in Nalgonda District. The well attended meeting consisted of over 150 NRIs from this specific region of Andhra Pradesh which has long been neglected with regard to basic needs and addressing drought issues facing the districts of Nalgonda, Mahboobnagar, Warangal, and Ranga Reddy districts. A presentation included audio visual clippings of affected villages and associated problems facing hapless villagers. During the open discussion involving the dignitories present, several NRI's expressed concern over these long standing issues as they realized the problems facing their elders and the children alike in these affected areas have stayed the same. It was a touching issue for most of the NRI’s who hail from these areas; several attendees pledged their ! support and expressed enthusiasm in addressing these issues the Government conveniently puts on a back burner. They sought an immediate and permanent solution for these issues that threaten not only livelihood but also life. A specific action oriented plan has been decided on to touch on these issues. A committee to advance these issues will be one such forthcoming development. As an immediate action, the NRIs present and several active members of the community contacted MLA's hailing from this affected region including Mr. Ponnala Laxmaiah, Mr. Suresh Reddy, Mr. Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and asked for their support in the upcoming legislative session. Several NRIs living in USA are contributing to various projects in affected areas and several more are willing to answer the call of their mother land. There will be future meetings organized in other major cities in USA. Nalgonda.Org has previously organized a petition highlighting the Fluorosis issue in the affected region has persuaded elected representatives from the region to bring the issue to the forefront. Over 1,000 signatures were previously submitted to the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu.
