1. How many types of marriages do ancients texts include?
They include eight types of marriage. The first type is allowed for everyone. The first 4 types are allowed for Brahmins. All eight types are allowed for Kshatriyas. The 8th type I have (Pisachaka) is different from what Tara had in her detailed answer.
1. Brahma - where the father of the bride invites a learned man and gives his daughter in marriage to him.
2. Daiva - where the daughter is given to a priest who duly officiates at a sacrifice as part of the performance of this rite.
3. Arsha - when the father gives away his daughter after receiving a cow and a bull from the bridegroom.
4. Prajapatya - Father gives away his daugher after blessing the couple with the text "May both of you perform together your duties"
5. Asura - Man pays the woman's father what he thinks is appropriate and takes the woman (In Mahabharata, King Satanu tries this method to marry Satyavati, but Satyavati's father ups the demand - that her sons should be heirs to the throne).
6. Gandharva - Intense love for each other at first sight; voluntary union of a woman and a man with only the nature around them bearing witness to the event (Dushyanta - Shakuntala).
7. Rakshasa - forcible abduction of a woman by a man (Krishna snatching Rukmini, Arjuna taking away Subhadra).
8. Pisacha - Forcible abduction of man by a woman (Usha abducticting Aniruddha)
