Hello guys, You people seem to have diagressed from the actual discussion point. The point is: If the Columbia accident avoidable? Let us discuss this point, not the other issues which have no direct bearing on the subject. I firmly feel that once launched any space vehicle is prone to be facing all the possible risks including a meteor hit. The other day some people were saying that if only the damaged silica tiles (which are fixed to withstand the heat while entering earth's atmosphere) were fixed while doing a space walk, the accident could have been avoided. The argument is brattish, and replete with lack of knowledge of space science. You can do anything inside the space vehicle. You can even undertake a space walk and do some repair work to the satellites, but please be informed you cannot reach out to the outer surface of your own vehicle except to the fixed exit points. If something needs to be done to repair the damaged tiles, NASA should have sent another manned spaceship and the people inside it should have come out for a space walk to replace the damaged tiles, which, however, would have been a tougher job because the technology for replacing the silica tiles requires more sophisticated tools, which, perhaps would not have been possible from the technological point of view. Hence it should be safely presumed, based on the hard facts that are now available, that: ·NASA officials who have noticed the damaged tiles have ignored the importance of the tiles ·Hence they did not report their observations to the higher ups for initiating proper action ·If only the matter was given due importance it would have been possible for the NASA to send another spaceship over there and bring the astronauts safe home ·The failure to alert the concerned heads calls for action against the personnel who erred in their judgment Having agreed on that we must now see how honestly the erring-personnel would be dealt with by either NASA or US govt. Our tributes to the astronauts including Kalpana Chawla, who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of progress of science and technology, will have a meaning only if we are in a position to demand the US governemnt to let us know who erred, where they erred, and why they erred. More imporantly while acknowleding err is human, we must also ask for sincere apologies fromt the people who are responsible for taking such crucial things light.

In fact, I too(like her friend Mr. Adesh) wish that Government of India must award her with the prestigious "Bharat Ratna". This is the tribute we can give to her, a truly deserving lady.

Yeah.. I too wished to share my feelings. But I am watching TV. Really one can't express anything. But Coming to her, inspite of being proud for her being an Indian, moreover an woman, my love and respect for her is more with her words to our Mr. Vajpayee's question. How is the feeling watching India from Space? She replied::: Saare Jahaan Se Acchaa. I really admire her a lot like every Indian. While watching STAR NEWS today, I came to know that she is very much in touch with her school, teachers and also with the students there. Because of her, the students of that School can go to NASA and learn there for few days. At that time, she used to be with them, cook for them, inspire them, guide them. She is a very simple and good. She is very much an Indian though she had been to US few years back, the feeling is expressed by a student who had the privilege of visiting NASA. Very sad moments for India. God will surely give her peace. The First Woman Astronaut and Second Indian and First Indian Woman in Space. Most Unfortunate death. But still she is great. Her life is very much fruitful. "Phool chaahe thodi samay ke liye khile, magar sabhi ko khushi dethe hain". Her life is a flower which gives the fragrance of science to everyone.
