group is investigating genetic factors and changes in gene expression profile that contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Molecular genetic epidemiological studies are carried out to investigate contribution of genetic variants to inter-individual differences in susceptibility to and progression of atherosclerosis related diseases including coronary heart disease, stroke and aneurysms. Functional studies on selected genetic variants are performed to examine their biological effects, and gene expression profiling undertaken to investigate which genes are up- or down-regulated in atherogenesis.
A large part of our work has been focused on the genes encoding the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix proteins and play an important role in tissue destruction and remodelling. In addition to studying their role in atherogenesis, we are investigating their contribution to development and progression of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, all involving tissue destruction and remodelling.
