Dear Friends.. This is in the inspiration of Dr Abdul Kalam's Speech: Mr. Abdul Kalam interestingly is a Patriotic Indian Muslim who did pioneering work as Scientific Advisor and Scientist in India. He made India proud by his extraordinary work. It is told by one of my friends who had an opportunity to meet him (in DRDO Labs) that this man does not look like a scientist at all. He sometimes walks into the Labs with small short and slippers and does work. He himself told one day that that he reads Gita everyday. He is an ardent reader of the History of India and the world. He wrote wonderful books like the "Wings of Fire" and his autobiography. I had the opportunity to read the excerpts of his book if not the book in entirity. I am eager to read them. Dr. Homi Bhabha is one more person who is a pioneer of Indian Research in Atomic energy. He was the man who actually gave the entire blue print of the three phase Indian Nuclear programme. He is a Parsi. Means a Zoroastrian. Parsis are great businessmen. Historically Parsis have migrated to India from Persia, means the present day Iran. Zoroastrianism is as old as Buddhism. Zoroaster founded Zoroastrianism in 6th century BC just exactly when Siddhardha and Vardhamana founded Buddhism and Jainism respectively. And it was the same 6th century B. C in which Confucious founded Confucianism in China ( a major ancient religion). It was the same 6th century BC again in which the great Permanides of Greece flourished and preached his Greek pioneering philosophy. Coming back to Dr. Bhabha and Parsis, they have always proved to be patriots to India since they arrived in India in 8th century AD from Iran (they were persecuted by the Arabs in Persia when Islam was established in Persia). There are many interesting stories about the Persians migrating to India and getting the permission from Indian Rajahs in ancient times in Indian History. Jamshedji Tata is also a Parsi. Dadabhai Naoroji is also a Parsi. Azim Premzi of Wipro is a proud Indian Musalman. In fact many people dont know that he is a Muslim. W. C. Benerjee is a Christian actually. He was the first President of the Indian National Congress which was born in 1885. A great Indian he was. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Badruddin Tyabji were great freedom fighters but they were more Indian than Islamic. If I should give examples...I should give many like this. I am proud that this country, this holy land has always been resilient and absorbed every culture, every religion and every race. India has been described by many historians as a "big sink" in which whatever comes, every body is welcome and absorbs into this mightly sink. Everything is acceptable and we respect everyone. Dr. Kalam was talking about the invasion of many types of people to India. Why should India be invaded first of all? None invades a land which is not useful. Since Ancient times India has been known as a mine of Gold, Silver, precious stones, great wealth, fertile lands and happiness. Everyone wanted to come and enjoy this richness or loot this. We have never tried to invade other countries or other's property. This was mainly for two reasons. A person who is satisfied in his own place and enjoys his fertile fields and the fruit from it does not need to go on war and annex other's territories. We have been rich throughout history. We need not run for other's money. Number 2 reason is that.... India traditionally is a land of Dharma (Dhamma in Prakrit). We have always believed in acceptance and toleration. Not that our rulers did not have the courage or the fighting abilities to defeat foreigners. There are two ways of influencing others. One through penetration. Second through percolation. We have always believed in percolation. A Revolution has every makings of being buried because it happens all of a sudden. But an Evolution is slow, constant and is more powerful. Hence Evolution has the lasting power. We believed in this Evolution. We certainly made our culture percolate to the other parts of the world. Buddhism percolated outside the country to Central Asia, West Asia, South East Asia, Far East and the influence of Indian philosophy was very much known to the Western world (the Europe) and they were very much influenced by it. The Greeks, the Romans and others were highly influenced by Indian philosophy. The great Aristotle himself (a great versatile genius) and the Guru of Alexander, the King of Macedonia was highly appreciative of Indian Science and philosophy in his times. His influence on Alexander and Alexander's trial to conquer India were not unconnected events. Alexander himself became highly spiritual by the spiritual mysticism of India. He said that he learnt a lot in India and I believe you very well know why he wanted his right hand to be left up to be seen by the outside world out of his coffin. Our country has been a country of secularism. Hindutwa itself has secularism. Secularism flows in the veins of every Indian. This has been a legacy of our forefathers. In fact, all the major religions came to India and spread freely since their birth. Hinduism is considered to be the most ancient of the forms of worships. Judaism (of the Jews) is another very ancient religion. Christianity is born around 2000 years back. ( It is of course another thing that nobody knows the age of Christ exactly). Christianity is born in the bosom of Judaism. Christians persecuted Jews..and Jews had to flee their motherland. They went and settled in all parts of the world (from their mother land Palestine and Jerusalem). Many Jews came to India too. Everywhere in the world the Jews were persecuted and killed. But India is the only country in the world where the Jews were in complete safety and security and had their freedom of worship. Christians came next. Christianity came to India in the very first years of its birth. (Most of the people dont know this). In the first century AD, a great disciple of Jesus Christ, called St. Thomas visited India and met the ruler of North India called Gondophernes. He took permission to preach Christianity in India and he was successful in that. He preached in India and died in India. His tomb is in India. Many churches were established in India. Islam came to India in the very time it was established. The Arabs were great friends of India. They were great traders and also appreciated and learnt greatly from Indian sciences, Arts. Mathematics and other studies. Many think that the first Muslims to come to India were the invaders like Md Bin Qasim and the Mahmud of Ghazni. Unfortunately it was not right. The first Muslims in India were the great Arab traders who had trade with India since ancient times. The Arabs had traditional ties with India culturally, economically since times immemorial even in 3rd and 4th century BC also. They did tremendous trade with India on the western coast of India and were carriers of Indian goods which were in great demand in the West (Europe). They got highly profited. They were not only mediators in trade. They also mediated and carried Indian Sciences, Mathematics, Metallurgy, Philosophy and culture, other Arts to Europe and the rest of the world. They were the people who took Chess (Chaturanga), Zero(0), Indian Numerals (0 to 9), Metallurgy, Astronomy, Medicine and many other Indian achievements to the west. In fact ( you might remember) the numerals are also known as Arabic Numerals. Actually the Arabs who gave these numerals to the world today have actually aquired them from India. (which they called Hind). The Arabs called the Indian Numerals as "Hindse". These are all historical facts. The Arabs were the first to discover the phenomenon of Monsoons (called Mauzim). The Arabs have designed the first Dome, the true Arch, the Minar. They are great people historically. But people think that Christianity came to India in 15th century and Islam came to India as invasions only. Indians have accepted these faiths voluntarily too to some extent. Accepting them does not mean that they deny their faith. Our religion accepts and agrees every true principle in the world. That is the strength. I believe, when politicians and others who try to give lectures on the concepts of Secularism,. they are insulting the fabric of this holy land. Nobody needs to teach secular values to Indians. India has it in its fabric and blood. Mera Bharat Mahan !! Thank you for spending your time here.

Well...its inspirational but is flawed in many respects. It seems you are patriotic...we all are! It seems there is too much of generalization in your writing. And as far as criticizing ourselves is concerned, there are always exceptions. I know of many people who do nothing but praise our nation, very well knowing all these facts just to make sure that there is no more negative publicity about our country. You said, we run from one country to another in search of a new haven, well...I cant beleive that since I am yet to know of a person who did that. As far as buying fake certificates, spitting on the streets, etc., etc., is concerened, does every person in India does that? Do you specifically have to mention to people, who does not know about all these? It only goes to add to negative publicity. What I am trying to say all the time...is its not the problem with the people(not specific individual) but with the system. If the system improves, then people do change! Many lines in YOUR posting do CONVEY the same.

"ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY" End of Speech

Posted by: Mr. prasanth N At: 2, Nov 2001 7:21:31 AM IST
When it comes to us actually making a positive contributi n to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand. Or we leave the country and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money. Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too.... I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians

YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 kmph) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, "Jaanta hai sala main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost." YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. You can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country why cannot you be the same here in India. Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay Mr.Tinaikar had a point to make. "Rich people's dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place," he said. "And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?" He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place or are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? "It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry." So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbors, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU.

Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with vengeance. Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours. YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke, the airline is the worst in the world, and mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - YOURS. Give him a face - YOURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are. You pay $5 (approx. Rs.60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU comeback to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity. In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out without your head overed in Jeddah. YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, "see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else."
