Oh! this dowry .....
Just read an article whihc says that 33% of dowry deaths occur in UP, 15% in Bihar and so on... In karnataka, 3 women are killed each day for want of more money.
I, suddenly, remembeed that my social studies teacher in class 8th or 9th saying that each one of us sitting in that class should pledge toourselves that we will not take dowry and will not give dowry. Now as I think of those words from my teacher, I would like to call her and ask if she had given dowry at her daughters marriage and if she will take dowry while marrying off her son!!!
There maybe many guys who don't want to take dowry, are forced by the parents to take dowry. There seem to be many reasons for this: (1)The parents feel they have spent a lot of money onthe education of the boy and want to get the money back through the dowry.
(2)The parents feel that they have given money while marrying off their daughter, and now it becomes their RIGHT to take money.
(3)And the society, I have heard that people start spreading rumours about the groom who doesn't take dowry... people start saying that there is something wrong with this guy, bla-bla...
The very thought of these guys getting SOLD is so repulsive...
and the situationof educated women seems tobe even horrible. Now that getting B.Tech degrees especially in CS and IT depts has become very easy, the parents of the girls donot want to marry them off to some school teacher who has done B.Sc or M.Sc, even if he is a gold medalist... The brides parents want some guys with a software job or who is US returned etc... And this successful software professional doesnot settle for anything less than a car, a big house in a metro etc...
while the school teacher could have settled for something like a scooter and a good watch.
By saying that this I am not against the women getting into professional institutions, but makes me ponder as to what their education is teaching them???
