India Deserves Permanent membership in the Security Council [UN] After the five permanent members of the Security Council feuded over the war with Iraq, we have to seriously think about making India the biggest democracy in the world, a permanent member of the Security Council. Right now the permanent members are China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States. The status quo of the permanent members has not changed since the council's first meeting in 1946. Long before President Nixon's historical visit to China, India was the only nation, who was screaming for the admission of communist China into United Nations. Amazing that India was doing that when China attacked India. Paradoxically Communist China is a permanent member in the Security Council, where as the biggest democracy has no place in the Security Council! That is a shame. Let us look at some facts. India was the first country, which preached Nuclear disarmament. It has more than one billion people. Hindus, Moslems, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Bahaies, and Jews live in harmony in India. Moslem population in India is only second to that of Indonesia in the world. It is a nuclear power. Indian army is the 2nd biggest in the world. After British left India in 1947, India always have democratic government. India is the spearhead of the non - alignment movement during cold wars and still a very major force in Asia. To achieve a proper regional balance of powers in the Security Council, India has to be made a permanent member. Today Security Council is over represented by the western countries and under represented by Asia and Africa. Many like Ex President Clinton have stated India is a natural contender for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. Secretary General Kofi Annan has warned that lack of reform could weaken the council's standing in the world. How could anyone ignore India, the champion of Democracy? President Bush wants to sow the seeds of democracy all over middle east. If that is his objective, how can we continue to have a Security Council with out India as a permanent member? We need the assistance of democratic governments like India to sow seeds of democracy all over the world. Only through a nation like India we can achieve PEACE ALL OVER THE WORLD.
