NDTV, Tuesday, September 9, 2003 (New Delhi):
In the run up to the general elections, the demand for
separate smaller states seemed to be gaining momentum
yet again.
"In 1998 the BJP had one vote, two states as its
election manifesto. Now they have forgotten it," said
Chandrashekar Rao, Telangana Rashtra Party.
Politically, the demand for smaller states might
appear to be a lost cause, with none of the major
parties paying any more than lip service. But it is a
position that neither the Congress nor the BJP can
afford to ignore.
"The demand for Vidharba was recognised in their
manifesto, but political compulsions have forced them
to listen to the Shiv Sena. As a result Vidharba has
been forgotten," said Ajit Singh, Indian National Lok
Dal.
The five main movements for separate states include
Harit Pradesh out of West Uttar Pradesh, Bundelkhand
out of Madhya Pradesh, Vidharba out of Maharashtra and
Telengana out of Andhra Pradesh. The entire area
represents 150 Lok Sabha seats.
But the parties demanding separate states are yet to
make a clear strategy for the Lok Sabha elections.
However, the smaller players are looking for the right
banners to come together and then claim a share of
power if it is a fractured mandate.
