Posted by: Mr. Frank Abagnale Jr. At: 12, Nov 2003 1:28:36 PM IST I guess, the underlying ambiguity is because of the way the sound is defined.
The dictionary meaning of sound :
(1) Vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing.
(2) Transmitted vibrations of any frequency.
(3) The sensation stimulated in the organs of hearing by such vibrations in the air or other medium.
Suppose one goes by the first meaning, it is apparent that unless the frequency of the vibrations lie between the audible range of the receptor, there is no SOUND. It is just vibrations. And apparently , wat appears as sound to a certain living organism, may not be sound to certain other organism. Take an example of wind breezing across a moist feather and a dry leaf, a human hear can never percieve sound in the first case.. but it would certainly do in the second . Neverthless, there will be a another organism, for which the situation might be other way arnd.
Now coming to the second way of definition of the sound... ( which is mathematical ) No matter whether there is a receptor or not ..any vibration can be expressed as A*cos(wt+d) + B* (sinwt+c) ( u may want to add an exponential term , if it is damped). And as long as there is a medium through which it can travel , the trasmitted vibrations exist. In this way, neverthless there is some one arnd or not , the tree falling would certainly transmit the sound.
Hope it makes sense :-)

1.In a dense forest a tree annot fall down. Even if, it will not make much noise.
2. In a forest somany trees hence, one tree fell down doesn't make difference.
3. In a deep forest who will notice the trees are deep rooted or uprooted.
4. Fires
