| /*Can it be a woman's choice to take on her husband's name or let the maiden name remain? */
Why not? all the countries allow them to do so.
/*How much say has the husband or his family in this matter?*/
I think most of the educated ones do not mind much about not changing maiden name because it is pain if they wnat to change their names on all certificates.
I was wondering...does that apply to the surnames of children too??
surnames dont serve much purpose other than tracing the family tree.
In tamil nadu, from what I know people do not have sur names instead they have their father's name as their last name..so there is noway u can trace a family tree

I read this article about surnames.. it is informative.
In matrilineal societies (in some places in meghalaya and kerala), it is always through a women, the family line is traced.
Surnames can be abolisehd all together..
In south India two people with same sur name do not marry but they marry first cousins (which is incest according to many cultures)
